Former Mayor receives Chancellor's Medal

The University of Bath has presented former Mayor of Bath and long-standing Bath & North East Somerset councillor, Marian McNeir with the Chancellor’s Medal.

Cllr McNeir, a linguist and former modern languages adviser and inspector, received the medal yesterday at a meeting of the University’s Court. Members of Court are drawn from a wide range of stakeholders in the University’s activities.

The Chancellor’s Medal was introduced in 1994 to reward individuals who have made a valuable contribution to the life and work of the University that is not directly academic in nature. The award is open to any individual who has supported the University and promoted its strategies and development in a significant and dedicated way.

Professor Glynis Breakwell, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bath, said: “This award is richly-deserved. Marian has helped us to foster closer relations between the University and the City of Bath. She takes a keen interest in the work of the University and has always been very generous with her time and counsel. We have seen enormous benefits from her contribution to our governance and we look forward to working with her for many years to come.”

Cllr McNeir, who represents the Lyncombe Ward on B&NES Council, has served for a total of nearly eight years as a member of the University’s Council. She is a member of the Audit Committee and the Nominations Committee and has served previously on the Arts Committee and Student Experience and Strategy Committee. She is also a part-time lecturer in the Department of European Studies and Modern Languages.

Cllr McNeir said: “I’m very honoured to be chosen this year and when I think back to my predecessors I realise what distinguished company I’m in. It’s been a tremendous pleasure and a great privilege.”
