Little Theatre
The launch will be at the Little Theatre in the centre of Bath

Press Release - 24 February 2009

University launches unique Spanish and Latin American film collection

The University of Bath is celebrating the launch of a new Spanish and Latin American Film collection with a special public showing of one of its most popular movies.

The hit Argentinian film, Las Nueve Reinas (The Nine Queens) will be shown at The Little Theatre in Bath on Thursday 26 February to officially mark the opening of the movie library.

The film collection has been sponsored by Abbey Santander, and is already proving very popular with students and staff.

Situated in the University library (in the Self Access Language Centre on the 5th floor), it already contains approximately 200 Spanish and Latin American films. DVDs can be taken out overnight by students and staff at no cost.

The collection, initially put together by David Montero of the Department of European Studies and Modern Languauges, is truly eclectic, ranging from popular hits such as ‘Motorcyle Diaries’ to little known Argentinian gems such as ‘Historias Minimas’, through to Spanish classics such as Almodovar’s ‘What have I done to deserve this’.

David said: “We have aimed to put together an accessible collection of some of the most popular and representative films and documentaries in this first year. From here we hope to begin constructing a truly outstanding academic and popular resource centre – and one of the UK’s most complete collections of Spanish and Latin American DVDs.”

Dr Peter Lambert, Senior Lecturer in Latin American Studies (ESML), added: “We wanted to use some of the money from Santander to create a very special resource that would raise awareness of social, political and cultural issues in Latin America and Spain, through the medium of film and documentary.

“The University of Bath has an impressive track record as a centre of excellence in terms of European film studies, so it seemed logical to build on this.”

Whilst the film collection is only available to students and staff, the film showing at The Little Theatre is open to all.

Doors open at 6.20pm with the film due to begin at 6.30pm. Tickets are available from the Little Theatre Box Office on 01225 330817.
