Understanding social security: issues for policy and practice

The second edition of this popular text, edited by Jane Millar (PVC Research and Professor of Social Policy), is published this week by Policy Press.

Reform of the social security and tax system has been at the heart of the Labour Government’s agenda since 1997, with major policy changes affecting the incomes of millions of people, including some of the poorest and most disadvantaged in society.

This book provides the information and analytical tools to make sense of these policy developments and to evaluate future policy options.

The book covers topics such as reform of pensions, benefits for migrants, global social security, sickness and disability benefits, tax credits, and information technology.

Alongside Jane’s own chapters, on tax credits and on social security reform, there are also chapters by other members of the Centre for the Analysis of Social Policy, including Tess Ridge on benefits for children, and Emma Carmel and Theo Papadopoulos on governing social security.
