Health benefits of smoking ban could be lost, if the NHS is not better prepared
NHS services to help smokers quit could struggle to cope with an increase in the number of people wanting to give up before the introduction of a smoking ban next summer, according to analysis of the experience in Scotland by Linda Bauld (Social & Policy Sciences).

Enrolment starts for new part-time courses
From fashion to food & drink, and from horticulture to history, enrolment has opened for a new spring programme of part-time courses at the University of Bath and at the Oakfield campus.

Lunchtime GULPS taste success
Over 200 people in Bath and Swindon have enjoyed the first series of GULP lectures run at lunchtime, so further lectures are planned for the new year.

Local people invited to shape theatre in Swindon and Wiltshire
People with an interest in local theatre in Swindon and Wiltshire had the chance to shape its future, at a day of discussion and debate hosted by TheatreWorks this week.

Café Philo, Bath
Stuart Reynolds (Biology & Biochemistry), will introduce the topic of the 80th Café Philo: Evolution and intelligent design, in the Green Park Brasserie at 7.15 for 7.30pm on Monday 4 December 2006.

Expert input into Sustainable Education
William Scott (Centre for Research in Education and the Environment) represented the UK at an international workshop on the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development in Bonn. The invitation came from the German Commission for Unesco and the State Government of North-Rhine Westphalia. The purpose of the workshop was to seek international expert input into the development of Education for Sustainable Development in order to increase its visibility and effectiveness both in Germany and internationally.

Dr Malcolm Bottomley made SEM Fellow
Malcolm Bottomley, former University Medical Officer and the initiator of the original postgraduate programme in Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM), has been made a Fellow of the new Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine (UK). The Faculty was created this year following the recognition of SEM as a clinical speciality. Membership is open to doctors who have completed basic specialist training and passed the diploma examination. Fellowship is reserved for those who have made a significant contribution to SEM.

Chemical Engineering hosts prize-giving evening
The Department of Chemical Engineering hosted a reception to celebrate the excellent achievements of our undergraduate students during the 2005/6 academic year.

University departments wanting to use the technology of podcasting - delivering regular audio content to subscribers over the internet - can get help from the Department of Marketing & Communications.

Successful SuperJANET migration
The University has successfully switched to a new high-speed telecommunications network which links academic sites in the UK, SuperJANET5.

Motorcyclists - please register your details
The Security Department would be grateful if motorbike owners could register details of their motorcycles.

This year's Carol Service will take place on Wednesday 13 December (not Thursday as usual). The service, in Bath Abbey, starts at 7.30pm; get there early to get a seat, doors open at 7pm.
