Council approves withdrawal from the Gateway project
University Council has agreed the University should withdraw from the Swindon Gateway project and review its strategy for Oakfield.

Celebrity endorsements less effective for many products
New research by Brett Martin (Management) suggests that advertisements featuring endorsements by celebrities such as David Beckham may be less effective than those featuring ordinary people.

Research shows email 'refines rather than alleviates gender differences'
Research conducted by Niki Panteli (Management), in conjunction with Dr Monica Seeley of Mesmo Consultancy and Visiting Fellow at City University, has shown that although email provides the opportunity for ‘relaxing' traditional patterns of interactions, it does not alleviate gender differentials.

TV historian David Starkey to open refurbished library
The historian and TV presenter Dr David Starkey will officially open the new study facilities in the University's library, at a ceremony on Wednesday 7 March at 12 noon.

Art competition looks for most innovative painting
The University is organising an art competition with awards totalling £2,500 for the best paintings on the theme of 'Innovation and Enterprise'.

Complete a survey about campus shops & win £150
Would you like to take part in an online survey with the chance to win one of two £150 cash prizes? The University needs your views as part of the planning process to make the central campus area as attractive, accessible and pleasant an environment as possible.

Staff Recognition Award - nominations open
This award recognises either individual members, or small groups, of support staff who have shown excellence in the way in which they have undertaken their duties. The award consists of a cash prize of £500 to the successful nominee. Please consider nominating outstanding members of support staff.

Emergency Management Plan available online
The purpose of the Emergency Management Plan is to provide a framework to assist those involved in an emergency to structure a co-ordinated response. The main considerations when dealing with any emergency incident are: (i) the safety of students, staff and visitors; (ii) business continuity; (iii) safe-guarding the reputation and brand of the University; and, (iv) the protection of property. Please familiarise yourself with the relevant procedures.

Advice on research governance
Health and social care researchers who use Primary Care Trust patients, patient data, staff or facilities will be able to access advice on research governance at weekly drop-in sessions on Monday afternoons being run by the School for Health.

Funding opportunities in FP7
The UK Research Office (UKRO) will be holding a proposal writing event at the University of the West of England on 12 March. The aim of the session is to provide participants with an overview of the Marie Curie actions in the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), a deeper understanding of the proposal format and the key issues researchers are required to address in planning and writing their proposal.

Internet Explorer 7 browser to be rolled out across campus
In mid-late March the Internet Explorer 7 browser will be rolled out to computers across the campus. BUCS IT training has produced guides for using IE7.

UK/US collaboration call for bids
Researchers are invited to apply for pump-priming awards provided by the SETsquared UKUS programme, specifically designed to stimulate collaboration in the area of sustainable environments and alternative fuels.

Retirement of Sue Oakley
Sue Oakley, PA to the Head of the Department of Education, retires from the University this month. Staff are invited to a farewell gathering in the Claverton Rooms on Thursday 15 March with tea, coffee and cake from 4pm onwards. For catering purposes, please contact Kate Youngs, ext 6341. There is a card and collection for a present in 1 West North 3.7.

  • Brett Martin (Management) was interviewed on BBC 5 Live, GWR, Bath FM and BBC Radio Bristol about his research into the use of celebrities in advertising.
  • Michael Carley (Mechanical Engineering) was filmed by BBC Points West talking about hearing damage caused by motorcycle helmets.
  • Glennys Howarth (Social & Policy Sciences) gave an interview to Radio Uno, Spain, about the grant from funeral directors to help develop the Centre for Death & Society.
  • Peter Reader (Marketing & Communications) appeared on Brunel FM, BBC Radio Swindon and Bath FM explaining the University's decision to withdraw from the Gateway project in Swindon.
  • BIME has received a lot of media interest in its new smart home for people with dementia with coverage on BBC Points West, Bath FM, BBC TV Breakfast Show, Radio Bristol and in print: Bath Chronicle, Bristol Evening post, The Daily Mail, Professional Engineering, and several magazines aimed at older and disabled people.
  • The Holburne Museum MUSE online catalogue/learning resource, developed in part by the BUCS Web Development Team, was featured in the Bath Chronicle.
  • A photo of newly qualified prescribing pharmacists who recently completed the University's course was published in Chemist & Druggist.

Local people have the opportunity to hear about prehistoric rock art in Armenia, in a GULP lecture at the Claverton campus on Wednesday 7 March.

The Silk Road retraced
Local people can retrace the adventure of the ancient Silk Road trading route, in a GULP lecture at Oakfield on Wednesday 7 March.

Mind-reading, mysteries & maths
Popular mathematics communicator, Rob Eastaway, is giving this year's Bath Taps into Science lecture. In his lecture Rob will demonstrate and explain some of his favourite mathematical mind-reading tricks, some of which date back to the time of Leonardo da Vinci, and make you realise that some of the most wonderful mysteries are within everyone's grasp and have nothing to do with the paranormal. Tickets are free but must be booked in advance by contacting adssjs@bath.ac.uk, ext 6989.

YULP science lecture for school children
School students in Swindon are set to be inspired to answer the big questions in life, in a free science lecture on cosmology at the University of Bath in Swindon on Friday 9 March.

How has Darwin changed the way we think about society?
Leading figures from a range of social science disciplines will meet to discuss whether the theory of natural selection has anything to offer present-day students of cultures and societies at a seminar on Wednesday 14 March.

PERFORMANCES

  • Darkin Ensemble presents Augustine (Saturday 3 March). Through beautiful, intricate choreography, the Darkin Ensemble creates a compelling physical language telling the story of Augustine, a 15-year old girl, and the severe hysteria outbreaks in Paris during the 1890s.
  • Bath University Student Theatre presents An Ideal Husband  (Till Saturday 3 March) at the Mission Theatre, Bath. There is sparkling wit and piercing observation in this timeless comedy that exposes social and political hypocrisy, and the illusions men and women have about marriage.

Debbie prepares for World Champs
University of Bath postgraduate student Debbie Palmer is aiming to help Great Britain win promotion at ice hockey's World Women's Championships. 

Bayman and Corbin added to England netball squad
Two more student netballers have been called up to England's senior national squad following impressive performances in the Superleague and at the recent Europe Open Championships.  Midcourt players Sara Bayman and Sasha Corbin have been added to the national squad.

Mariana retains under-19 title
Coach Education & Sports Development student Mariana Agathangelou retained her women's doubles title at the Yonex England National Under-19 Badminton Championships.
