Inspector endorses plans for new Swindon campus
The University of Bath in Swindon has welcomed the planning inspector's endorsement of plans for a new campus at the Gateway site.

University of Bath awarded almost £2.5M
The University of Bath has been awarded £2,436,784 in the provisional, indicative HEIF3 allocations - new funding to enable universities to transfer knowledge to business and industry.

Award helps develop low cost cockroach technology
Julian Vincent from the Centre for Biomimetic and Natural Technologies has received a prestigious award of £30,000 from the Royal Society to help develop novel dehumidifier technology inspired by the desert cockroach.

Benchmarking the knowledge economy
The Department of Social and Policy Sciences at the University of Bath is organising a Symposium in association with the European Institute of the London School of Economics to be held at LSE (Room D202) on Monday 19 December from 3 - 6.15pm, where Professor Graham Room's new book written (in collaboration with other Bath academics) will be launched.

Open day opens doors to interdisciplinary research
More than 40 researchers from across the University took part in the open day held in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering recently to find out about research taking place in the Department and discuss potential future collaborations.

My voice, my vote, my community
Professor Helen Haste's latest research concludes that young people care about social justice but don't trust the Government to deliver it.

Honorary degrees from University of Bath
Winter awards ceremonies take place at the Assembly Rooms next Tuesday and Wednesday when the following five people will be awarded with honorary degrees:

  • Jacqueline Wilson, writer of the Tracy Beaker stories.
  • Brian Ford, OBE, founder and Director of the Numerical Algorithms Group.
  • Simon Murray, CBE, entrepreneur who helped develop Orange, and became the oldest man to walk to the South Pole unaided.
  • Sir Stuart Lipton, founder and Chairman of the property company Stanhope, as well as a former Chairman of the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment.
  • Sir David Watson is a champion of lifelong learning (previously know as adult education), and wrote the seminal publication Managing the Modular Course.

International honour for academic
At a meeting of international educators held in The Hague in November - comprising over 3000 participants, the largest of its kind in the world - Professor Jeff Thompson (Education) was presented with an award for his outstanding contribution to the promotion of international education through his teaching and research over thirty five years. Jeff said: "I am particularly honoured and pleased to be presented with this award from a constituency containing so many practitioners in schools and universities around the world".

Lifelong Learning students receive awards
Students of the Division for Lifelong Learning received their University of Bath awards at a presentation held at the Oakfield campus on Friday 25 November.

The new Energy & Manager, Peter Phelps, is urging departments to make every effort to reduce heating and lighting costs in order to cut the campus bill.

All departments are now required to use:

  • RecommIT (via the waste services department), for the disposal of all levels of computers containing intact hard drives.
