Vice-Chancellor Professor Rodney Quayle dies
We regret to announce the death of Professor Rodney Quayle, FRS, on 26 February.
Professor Quayle was the Vice-Chancellor of the University from 1983 until 1992.
£3,000
scholarships for best international students
The University has launched a new £200,000 scholarship scheme to attract
the most able international students to study here at Bath.

million research grant awarded to cut wasted energy in oil refineries
A £2.2 million grant has been awarded to three universities
including Bath to find a way to make oil refineries more efficient
and so cut UK energy bills
by millions of pounds each year.
MRSA use amoeba to spread, sidestepping hospital protection measures,
new research shows
The MRSA ‘superbug’ evades many of the measures introduced
to combat its spread by infecting a common single-celled organism found
almost everywhere
in hospital wards, according to new research by Professor Mike Brown (Department
of Pharmacy and Pharmacology) and colleagues.
Bath academics help launch campaign to get men to talk to
their doctors
A new campaign to encourage men to talk to their doctors has been complemented
by the launch of a new publication by the School for Health which will help
GPs improve their skills and expand their knowledge of men’s health needs.

takes a new approach to learning and teaching
In January a new department was created to promote learning and teaching
at the University. The office, one of the first in England,
reflects a national move towards a more pedagogical approach to identifying
the best ways of improving the student learning experience.

The University’s links with one of the most prestigious and internationally
renowned business schools in Spain have been strengthened by a visit from
Professor Alfredo Arahuetes, Vice-Dean of the University of Comillas (ICADE)

Public Meeting: ‘Students
and the local community’
The Bath
and North East Somerset Council Student Liaison Committee will be holding
its third public meeting in Bath
to give local residents the opportunity to raise issues concerning students
and the local community.
Public lecture on stem cells & regenerative medicine
The medical potential
offered by stem cells and tissue engineering was discussed at a public
lecture on Wednesday 1 March. This new approach to regenerative medicine,
which includes stem cell therapy, gene therapy and tissue engineering, aims
to develop treatments and technologies that enable the repair of damaged or
diseased tissues and organs.
Free public lecture: Is Swindon a solar city of the future?
A lecture at Oakfield on Wednesday 1 March showcased some of Europe's
self-proclaimed solar cities, where exciting developments in renewable
technologies, new approaches to building design and innovative engineering
solutions are being applied to create low-carbon developments and inspire
change.
Spring programme of local day-courses launched
A new series of local
day-courses has been launched by the Division for Lifelong Learning. The
courses, which run on weekends during March and May, cover a huge range of
creative and academic interests, including courses on creative writing,
beadwork, philosophy and life drawing.
Last places available on Diploma in Fitness Excellence
There are just 10
places left in the new intake for the TeamBath Diploma in Fitness
Excellence, a qualification that provides a comprehensive vocational
knowledge of the fitness industry.
University launches online experts' database for the media
The University
has launched an online database of experts willing to talk to the media. The
database lists the experts by area of expertise and by name, and gives
telephone and email contact details. More than 100 staff from all the
faculties and schools have agreed to put their details on the database, and
it is open to any academic member to add their names.
Open
evening to answer questions on life at university
Local sixth-form students and their families have been invited to attend an open
evening to get tips and advice on fees, funding and budgeting whilst at university.
The first evening for upper-sixth students was held on 1 March, to be followed
by another on 9 March, there will be a third evening on 28 March for lower-sixth
students.
