Football referees do favour home teams, study shows
Peter Dawson (Economics & International Development) has helped prove what Premiership football managers have been complaining about for years – that referees are inconsistent and favour home teams.

T-ray breakthrough could make detecting disease far easier
A breakthrough in the harnessing of ‘T-rays', which could dramatically improve the detecting and sensing of objects as varied as biological cell abnormalities and explosives, has been announced by a team including Stefan Maier and Steve Andrews (Physics).

Rare medal donated to celebrate 100 years of pharmacy in Bath
A Saltford man whose father - 'George' Guido Harry Penny - studied at the Bath College of Pharmacy in the early 1920s has donated a rare graduation medal to the Department of Pharmacy & Pharmacology.

Weekends of watercolour, wirework or web design on offer
Watercolours, wire, words and the web are just some of the ingredients of a packed programme of weekend dayschools on offer to local people at the University of Bath (Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 November).

New course: Master Java in six weeks
A new short IT evening course in Java, run by the University of Bath, gives people the chance to master the popular web-oriented programming language.

Giles Peters to serve on the University Court
Mr Giles Peters, Room Bookings Officer, Student Records and Examinations Office, has been elected unopposed as the representative of the clerical and administrative staff to serve on Court for the period ending 31 July 2008.

RCUK consultation on effectiveness of peer review
Following a review of the efficiency and effectiveness of the peer review process, the UK research councils have published a consultation paper to seek the views of institutions. Please forward comments to Dr Diana Newport-Peace by Friday 17 November.

Fresh Oriental expands its range
Fresh Oriental, the new speciality food shop on campus, has expanded its range to include authentic Indian & Indonesian food products and Chinese cookware and tableware.

418 bus affected by closure of Westmoreland Road to traffic
From Monday 6 November 2006, Westmoreland Road in Oldfield Park will be closed to all traffic due to gas mains replacement work for about three weeks. As a result, the 418 bus service will be affected.

  • Mark Brosnan (Psychology) contributed to a feature on BBC Breakfast TV about families reducing their waste.
  • Juani Swart (Management) talked on GWR about the Bath MBA being ranked in the UK's top ten.
  • Philip Salmon's work (Physics) into compounds which do not organise themselves into an ordered crystal structure when molten and cooled down quickly has recently been highlighted as a scientific success in the document 'Future perspectives and opportunities for the Institut Laue-Langevin'.
