'Speed-dating' to help stimulate new interdisciplinary research
Researchers in the departments of Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering have been awarded £400K by the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council as part of its “Bridging the Gap” initiative.

Artwork that changes to suit your mood
Working with colleagues from the University of Boston, John Collomosse (Computer Science) has developed electronic artwork that changes to match the mood of the person who is looking at it.

Bath builds a greener future
A new research centre based in Bath is developing novel innovative materials and products to improve the sustainability of the UK building industry. The BRE Centre in Innovative Construction Materials, based at the University of Bath, is a research and development partnership between the Faculty of Engineering and Design and the Building Research Establishment Ltd (BRE), the construction industry's largest research and consultancy agency.

Submarine to compete in European competition
An autonomous submarine built by students from Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science is taking part in the first ever European underwater vehicle challenge at Pinewood studios this week (3-6 August 2006).

Students bring some fun to Romanian orphans
A group of 19 students plus one member of staff from the University have recently returned from Romania where they spent a total of five weeks making a difference to the lives of orphan children in a small town called Comenesti.

Zambian children get Aids advice through sports clinics
Four students from various departments have just returned from an exchange programme in Zambia where they have been helping address some of Africa's most pressing problems through the use of sport.

Enrol for new autumn courses
The new autumn prospectus from the University's Centre for Lifelong Learning is now available. The programme of part-time courses, held at the Claverton campus and Carpenter House, starts on 9 October to 14 December.

Royal Mail pricing changes
From 21 August 2006, the Royal Mail is changing the way mail is charged. This new system will, in most cases, add a minimum of 11p to a 1st Class 100g (A4) letter.

  • William Megill appeared on television on ITV West where the submarine built by students was featured.
  • John Collomosse talked about his work into interactive artwork on GWR and Bath FM. The research has also been covered by the media in America, Canada and made it on to the Aljazeera network.
  • Caroline Gardiner outlined on GWR the new autumn programme of part-time courses that the Department for Lifelong Learning are running.

The Golden Age of British Painting | Till 24 September | Holburne Museum
The years from around 1700 to 1840 in Britain are considered by many to be one of the Golden Ages of European art.  During this period, art in Britain was transformed: a country of generally conservative and provincial tastes, served by immigrant artists from the continent, became one that produced its own outstanding painters, whose work was admired and imitated throughout Europe and North America.

DanceSCAPES  | Till 13 October | ICIA Art Space 1 & 2
A unique photography exhibition specially commissioned by Dance South West & Arts Council England South West is shown as part of the Big Dance 2006, a national celebration of dance across the UK between 15 & 23 July 2006. Leading photographer Kevin Clifford was invited to combine the beauty of the West Country with the imagination and talent of the region's most creative dance artists. ICIA at the University of Bath is the only venue in the south west to exhibit the full series of photographs.

Bronze for Biller
Stefanie Biller became the first TeamBath swimmer to medal at the 2006 European Championships when she struck bronze in the gruelling 25k open water race. Stefanie has recently transferred to train at the University, where she will begin studying for a Foundation Degree in Sports Performance in October.
