University celebrates Amy’s success
Amy Williams made a triumphant return to the University on Wednesday 3 March, to celebrate her Olympic success at the place she says “feels like home”.

Software sniffs out criminals by the shape of their nose
Dr Adrian Evans and Adrian Moorhouse, from the University’s Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering, have investigated whether images of people’s noses could be used to recognise individuals.

VC & NUS President to take part in debate on funding of HE
Staff and students from across the University are invited to attend a debate on Tuesday 9 March, about the future funding of Universities, aimed at spreading awareness of the issues surrounding the funding of the Higher Education sector as well as what the relevant stakeholders believe a future funding system should look like.

The cream of Bath fashion hits the catwalk
Students are working with local businesses to stage a spring Fashion Show for charity on Wednesday 17 March at the city’s Assembly Rooms at 7.30pm. Tickets can be purchased online from the event website.

University welcomes its new Pro-Vice-Chancellor
Professor Bernard Morley has taken up his post as the University’s new Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Learning & Teaching. Professor Morley started on 1 March 2010 and succeeds Professor Ian Jamieson who retired after 24 years of service.

Researchers present findings to European Parliament
Drs Anna Gilmore and Katherine Smith from the School for Health presented their research findings and debated their implications for policy in the European Parliament last week.

Professor debates the role of NATO & whether it has a future
Adrian Hyde-Price of the Department of European Studies & Modern Languages debated the role of NATO at an international workshop held at the Netherlands Defence Academy in Breda Castle from 24-26 February.

Changes to Points Based Immigration System – Important info for staff
The University is required to ensure that all students who are issued with a Certificate of Acceptance (CAS) are engaging with their studies. We are legally required to report to UKBA any changes which will affect the conditions of a student’s visa. Student Records & Examinations Office will soon be offering training in this area.

Uni launches e-Recruitment site
The first phase of the University’s new e-recruitment system has now been launched for all new vacancies posted from 3 March. Existing vacancies will appear on the website, but will continue to use the old application forms. This phase focuses on the application process and will greatly improve the way that job applicants are able to apply for vacancies and be kept informed about the progress of their application. 

Implementing proposals for re-organisation: Appointment of Deans of Faculty and Directors of Administration
As part of the ongoing re-organisation of the faculty structure, three deans have been appointed. Gary Hawley (Engineering & Design), Roger Eatwell (Humanities & Social Sciences) and David Bird (Science).

Over fifty teaching rooms to be upgraded this year
As a result of feedback from students, the University is making a substantial investment in the quality of its teaching rooms, and we are pleased to announce that University Council has agreed to upgrade over 50 more general teaching rooms during 2010.

LabVIEW seminar for inexperienced users
A technical Labview Academic Field Engineer (Adam Bakehouse) will be at the University on Monday 19 April. He will be giving two free half-day seminars aimed at inexperienced LabView users.

Public Lecture: An introduction to Islamic art and architecture
Local people are invited to a free public lecture on Wednesday 10 March, which will explore the art and architecture of Islam. The lecture begins at 5.15pm in Lecture Theatre 8 West 1.1.

Bath Science Café: Understanding pain without injury
Local people are invited to the next Bath Science Café on Monday 8 March (Raven Pub) to hear about a brain-centred pain phenomenon that isn’t caused by injury and is unresponsive to painkillers. Professor David Blake from Bath’s Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases will speak at 8pm at the informal gathering for science enthusiasts.

Register now for Cancer Research@Bath conference
Open to all staff and students with an interest in Cancer Research. The conference is on Tuesday 30 March and will include a poster session, talks related to cancer, with a coffee break and an informal networking drink.

Josh Green is the new U19 National men’s singles badminton champion but he had to beat his colleague and training partner, Ben Tier, in the national final to lift the trophy in Milton Keynes recently.

Golden Girl Amy arrives back to warm welcome
Golden girl Amy Williams and her fellow University of Bath-based British Olympic Winter Games athletes have returned to Bath. Amy became Team GB’s first individual Olympic Winter Games gold medallist for 30 years when she topped the podium in the skeleton at the Vancouver 2010 Games.
