£1.2 million grant could lead to 'designer' drugs

(Pharmacy & Pharmacology) have been awarded £1.2 million to help better understand how the cells in our body communicate using 'molecular messengers'.

Sheep infected with scrapie and cows infected with BSE have elevated levels of manganese in their blood before clinical symptoms appear, according to new research led by

Member of School for Health team made National Teaching Fellow
The Higher Education Academy has selected Tim Bilham from the School for Health as one of 50 National Teaching Fellows for 2007.
Professor elected Editor of OpenMath
James Davenport (Computer Science) has recently returned from a series of conferences at the Research Institute for Symbolic Computation, in Schloss Hagenberg, Austria. This Institute, part of the University of Linz, was founded by Professor Buchberger, an Honorary Graduate of the University. Professor Davenport gave four papers (one joint with Professor ffitch), and was elected an Editor of OpenMath, with special responsibility for the semantics of mathematics on the world wide web.
Catherine Sourbut leaves University to be ordained
Catherine Sourbut (Pain Management Unit) left the University a fortnight ago after 20 years of studying and working on campus so that she could be ordained in Wells Cathedral.
Conference report on Wellbeing in International Development
A report on the successful Wellbeing in International Development conference held at the University last week has been published. The conference helped put on the international agenda the idea that human wellbeing should be a core goal of economic and human development. Pedal powered submarine does well in international competition
A submarine built by Mechanical Engineering students that runs on pedal power has proved successful at an international competition in the US. Oxfam Lunches held in Chaplaincy Centre raise £1,000
This year the Chaplaincy Centre's Oxfam Lunch raised £1,000 for Oxfam's Rebuilding Schools After Conflict project. Lunches will recommence at the beginning of the new academic year.
Sustainable primary school is rewarded
The achievements of Batheaston Primary School in sustainability were recognised last week by William Scott, Director of the University's Centre for Research in Education & the Environment, in an awards ceremony at the Assembly Rooms.
Swindon schools gain new teachers
Secondary schools in Swindon will this year employ their 50th new teacher trained through a scheme set up in partnership with the University to improve teacher recruitment in the town.
Women invited to experience motorsport
Local women are being invited to experience a career in the motorsport industry, in free taster sessions at the Wiltshire College Motorsport Training Centre, Castle Combe race circuit.

A business event organised by Research & Innovation Services will take place on campus on Tuesday 17 July, bringing industry, government, advisory and compliance experts together, to provide businesses in the south west with the compliance information that they need. UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC)
The major funders of infection research in the UK have come together under the auspices of the UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC) to launch a new joint funding initiative. It will provide funds of up to £16.5 million to support research in this area.
An open meeting for potential applicants is being held in London on Tuesday 17 July.
Pioneering youth coach gives workshop

Imaging, Design & Print Services Open Day
Imaging, Design & Print Services are holding an open day on Thursday 12 July from 10am-4pm. You are invited to view the recently refurbished department, which will be officially opened by the Vice-Chancellor at 2.30pm. There will be demonstrations, special offers, an all-day buffet and those who attend and complete a feedback form will be entered into a prize draw for an iPod Shuffle.
New staff
The new starters update gives the name, job title and department of all members of staff who started at the University in June 2007. New email lists system rolls out across campus
This summer, Computing Services will roll out a new web-based email list management system across the University. The new system, which is currently being piloted in several departments, will enable people to create and manage their own lists through a simple webpage.
Student Services Staff Survey 2007
To help monitor and develop the effectiveness of the student services provided by
the Counselling Service, the Learning Support Service, the Student Money Service
and the Head of Student Services' Office, staff are being asked to take a few minutes to complete the Student Services Staff Survey 2007.
Skills Training & Research Supervisors Survey (STaRSS) 2007
The Graduate Office is requesting that Research Supervisors complete a survey which asks whether recent changes and challenges have impinged upon research degree study.
Review of student disciplinary procedures
Senate agreed earlier this month that a review of aspects of the student disciplinary procedure should take place under the chairmanship of Mark Humphriss, University Secretary.
The review will cover those matters handled by Student Services, the residences, Security Services, BUCS, the Library and the Students' Union.
Higher Education Volunteering Awards 2007 - nominations now open
The awards were set up to reward and recognise exemplary
volunteering projects and student and staff volunteers who have shown significant commitment to or exceptional execution of volunteering activities.
Last chance to sign up for Summer Holiday Playscheme
This year the University Playscheme will run from Monday 30 July to Friday 24 August at St Martins Garden Primary School.
