'Very pleased' to be placed in top ten by Times guide
The University is “very pleased” to be ranked ninth of out 109 UK universities by The Times University Guide 2007, rising from 13th place in last year's table. We appear 19 times in the UK top ten course league table, five courses have improved their position with Chemical Engineering and Italian making the biggest jump up the table. Four subjects maintained their ranking, with Mechanical Engineering and Social Work performing superbly in second place.

New World Cup football will unsettle goalkeepers, predicts scientist
The new football that will be used for the first time in the World Cup's opening game on Friday (9 June 2006) is likely to bamboozle goalkeepers at some stage of the tournament, Dr Ken Bray (sports scientist in School for Health) has warned.

World Cup action live from Germany
On Tuesday 13 June, staff and students can watch a day's terrific football on one of BBC Radio Five Live's big screens outdoors at the University of Bath's Sports Training Village for free.

Praise for 'smash hit' research paper
Professor Robert Eisenthal (Biology & Biochemistry) has been praised by Biochemist magazine, one of the UK's leading science journals for a 'smash hit' research paper he published over 30 years ago.

University Centre helps Widcombe celebrate its buried history
Two events sponsored by the University's Centre for Death & Society at the annual Widcombe summer festival will this year be dedicated to unearthing the buried history of the area's burial grounds.

Nicky gives presentation to HRH the Princess Royal
Nicky Fossey-Lewis (Sports Development) recently presented a paper at the 'Wellbeing in Business' Symposium at Lydiard House, Swindon. The Symposium was an opportunity for business leaders to hear from some of the UK's top ambassadors for health in the workplace. HRH the Princess Royal was the guest of honour. Nicky's presentation, 'Business and Sport in Partnership' considered knowledge transfer between sport and business and outlined the success of the TeamBath Focus corporate wellness programme.

Death of Professor Emeritus Graham Henshaw
It is with great sadness that we record the death of Professor Emeritus Graham Henshaw, former Head of the School of Biological Sciences, on Monday 5 June.

Graduates helping current students through University
The Hertzian Fund, set up by alumni of the University, has paid for two £1,000 scholarships for Philip Mountifield and Nathan Dumont, current students in the Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering.

Device for straightening fencing swords wins engineering scholarship for Lucy
Bath student Lucy Ferguson has been awarded a £5,000 Fry Memorial Scholarship for her innovative idea for straightening bent fencing swords.

One of UK's ‘most outstanding students' wins important engineering award
Angela Crowther, in her second year of a Civil & Architectural Engineering degree, has won a prestigious (minimum) Engineering Leadership Award from the Royal Academy of Engineering worth minimum £1,500.

Bath's Bloomin' Students
The winners of this year's Bath's Bloomin' Students garden competition have been announced as James Sauven and Matt Cappell of 15 Lime Grove Gardens in Bathwick Ward. Both are third years, studying Aerospace Engineering.

Heart-throb student has to settle for second place
Matt Stevens, Politics with Economics student, may have put the pop into prop, but the Bath Rugby player just missed out on the top spot in TV singing show, Celebrity X Factor. The notoriously tough judge Simon Cowell said before the vote: "There's a lot of whingeing celebrities, but backstage you've shaken my hand and behaved like a gentleman, it's been a pleasure to have you on the show. You performed one of my favourite songs. I didn't like it - I loved it."

Deal proposed in university pay talks
Pay increases proposed as a result of the negotiations between UCEA and all HE unions are as follows:
August 2006 greater of 3% or £515
February 2007 1%
August 2007 3%
May 2008 greater of 3% or £420
October 2008 greater of 2.5% or RPI (as at September 2008)

Election of member of non-academic staff to serve on University Council
Nominations are requested for the vacancy for one member of non-academic staff to serve on the Council of the University from 1 August 2006 to 31 July 2009.

Works to Library at level 2 (Parade)
Improvements are to be made to the entrance with better provision for disabled and mobility impaired staff, students and visitors. Work will commence on Monday 12 June, with Mansell Construction setting up a site compound to the north of the Library. Initial works will establish a temporary entrance for Library user at the rear of the building. The existing revolving door and other entrance/exits will be closed from Friday 16 June and the temporary entrance/exit must be used. Signs will be provided to direct staff/students and visitors. The Quick Access Computer Area will cease operation from Monday 12 June.

Relaunch of Estates website takes new look one stage on
The Estates department has launched a redesigned website which details its work on campus.

Open Forum
Members of University staff are invited to attend UKOLN's Open Forum on Wednesday 14 June. The sessions (some or all of which can be attended) will provide an opportunity to hear more about the work of UKOLN, a national centre of expertise in digital information management which is located at the University.

Supplier Expo 2006
The Purchasing Services Team invite all University staff to visit the University of Bath Supplier Expo 2006 on Tuesday 13 June in the Norwood Sports Hall between 11am and 3pm. A raffle will take place on the day with prizes such as camera, printer, MP3 player, DVD player.

University of Bath beach volleyball players Kerri Olding and Vicky Palmer won the inaugural Volleyball England Beach Student Cup competition.

Student successes at Metropolitan Regatta - National level rowing event
Heather Stanning (Sports Technology) and Anna Davidson (Sports Science) won the Senior 1 Coxless Pairs and came third in the Senior 2 Coxless Pairs event. Adam Freeman Pask (Natural Sciences) won the Elite Lightweight Men's Single Sculls event. All three athletes are part of the World Class Training Group coached by Paul Stannard.
