Chemical engineer's research into eliminating radioactive waste wins award
A Bath chemical engineer, Stan Kolaczkowski, who used a saucepan to develop a method of eliminating a source of radioactive waste has won a prestigious award from the Institution of Chemical Engineers.
Bath pain researchers to develop therapy that can be delivered in the home
Some people who suffer with chronic pain could learn how to manage their condition without relying on visits to hospital services, thanks to new research funding in the University's School for Health. The research is part of a major new nationwide project aimed at helping a variety of people with chronic conditions take control of their rehabilitation at home.
Professor Johnson elected as Academician
Malcolm Johnson, a visiting professor in the University’s Centre for Death & Society, has been elected to the Academy of Social Sciences.
Knowledge Transfer Partnership improves product design
A University Knowledge Transfer Partnership has successfully implemented a modern design system using computational tools to improve the product design and development process for Spirax-Sarco Ltd.
Wide-ranging short courses on offer at weekend of learning
From the mummies of Ancient Egypt, to the art and life of Jane Austen’s Bath, local people have the chance to enjoy a weekend of wide-ranging short courses at the University on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 November.
Porter to present first copy of his book to colleague
A Swindon porter will present the first copy of his published book to a colleague who helped him to realise his writing dream, when his book is launched at the University of Bath in Swindon on Monday 12 November.
Teenagers have film selected for festival final
A group of 18 Year 10 students who created a film at an animation workshop run by the University of Bath in Swindon are through to the final of a county film festival. ‘Swindon News’, an animated spoof of a local television news report, won over the audience at the local heats of the Preloader Film Festival.
Diwali celebrations on campus
A ceremony to mark the Hindu festival of Diwali took place on campus this week. Further celebrations to mark 'the festival of lights' are planned for next week
University saddened to announce death of Professor Martyn Farley, member of Court
The University is saddened to announce the death on Saturday of Professor Martyn Farley, a member of University Court since 1983, representing the Royal Aeronautical Society.

New look for University logo
Imaging, Design & Print Services is pleased to announce the launch of a redrawn image for the University logo. The new logo has been inserted automatically into most web pages and the Print Unit will be happy to advise on its use for future hard copy publications. Please use up stationery with the old logo before placing replacement orders.

Estates to launch electronic fault reporting
The Department of Estates will be launching a new way of reporting faults electronically next week. The new, easy to use screens are already in use in the residential buildings and they will soon be introduced to the rest of the campus.
New MATLAB tools are not just for engineers and scientists!
A free one-day seminar will give research staff the chance to find out about some of the MATLAB tools now available through the new campus-wide licensing agreement. The new tools could prove popular with the staff in the School of Management and School for Health, economists, biologists and social scientists as well as the engineers and scientists who currently make use of the package. Conference to mark 50th anniversary of European Union
Places for University staff are still available on a conference organised on 14 November to mark the 50th anniversary of the EU.
Book early for ERC events
The UK Research Office (UKRO) will be holding two regional information events for researchers, taking place on campus on Friday 18 January 2008. The aim of each session is to provide participants with an overview of the ERC in the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). Early booking is recommended as these events are likely to be over-subscribed.
Westwood Nursery collecting Tesco vouchers
The University nursery is taking part in the Tesco Sport for Schools & Clubs
2007 scheme, which runs between September and November 2007. It hopes
to collect as many vouchers as possible to receive free sport
equipment
for the nursery and would like to thank everyone in advance who will be helping
collect vouchers.

Britain’s wartime ‘Dig for Victory’ campaign will be discussed at a free public lecture at the University of Bath on Wednesday 14 November (5.15pm-6.15pm).
The future of hospice care in the UK
The head of Swindon’s Prospect Hospice will discuss the issues surrounding the future of hospices in a free public lecture at the University of Bath in Swindon on Wednesday 14 November (5.30pm-6.30pm).
The utility of force; the art of war in the modern world
General Sir Rupert Smith KCB DSO & Bar OBE QGM will be giving a public lecture (in association with the Royal Society of Arts) on Thursday 15 November
(6.30pm 8 West 1.1). General Sir Rupert Smith is an author and whilst the former Deputy Supreme Allied Commander of Europe, he was responsible for NATO's Operation Allied Force during the Kosovo war and the development of the European Security and Defence Identity. Judith Tucker's haunting drawings of the Baltic seaside resort of
Ahlbeck are inspired by photographs her grandmother brought with her
when she fled Nazi Germany to England in 1938. The charcoal drawings are infused with a sense of loss and shimmer with regret and yearning. Through melancholic coastal settings, the exhibition evokes memories of a vanished past.

Hugh Robertson MP, the Conservative Shadow Minister for Sport & the Olympics, toured the sports facilities at the University last Monday.
FA Cup comes to Bath
On Saturday 10 November Team Bath FC will bid for a place in the second round proper of the FA Cup for the first time in their short history. The University of Bath side host Chasetown FC in the first round proper tie, kicking off at 3pm at Twerton Park.
