Scientists make an important discovery into causes of Motor Neurone Disease
Scientists (including
Professor Ravi Acharya
from Biology & Biochemistry) are offering new hope for a cure for Motor Neurone Disease (MND) by identifying a gene that plays a key role in its development, according to research published in Nature Genetics.
New head of Pharmacy and Pharmacology
Professor Richard Guy has taken over as the head of the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology.
Bath academic appointed AIM Scholar
The Advanced Institute of Management (AIM) have appointed Dr Mickey Howard, lecturer in Operations for the Operations & Supply Group at the School of Management, to their prestigious Scholars' Scheme. Mickey is Co-Investigator for the European 5DayCar project 'ILIPT' (Intelligent Logistics for Innovative Product Technologies).
Writer in Residence
The German Section of the Department of European Studies and Modern Languages is delighted that they have been given funding by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to host a Writer-in-Residence-Programme. The author coming to Bath from 1-15 March 2006 is Michael Augustin, poet and radio journalist, who will be giving lectures, seminars and readings.
New course: studying death in its social context
The UK's only research centre based at the University and devoted to the study of death and society has launched a new postgraduate course that will help students develop a greater understanding of death in its social and cultural context.
New partnership with Shandong University, China
The University is pleased to announce the establishment of an EU-funded partnership between Bath's European Research Institute (ERI) and the Center for European Studies of Shandong University (CESSDU), China.
Bath student in last four of national competition
Student Adam Mallion (Electronics with space science & technology) was only one of four people in the UK nominated for Motorola's MOTOFWRD competition in which students across the country were asked consider new ways that technology could be used in everyday life. Although he didn't win,
Adam's short film A Seamless Future gained him a spot in the top four. Judges were impressed at how the film considered the application of new technologies.
Enterprising careers
A group of BSc in Business Administration (BBA) and BSc in Sociology with Human Resource Management students recently visited The Hub to hear from Jonathan Robinson, activist and founder of The Hub, and Sofia Bustamante who shared her experience of changing from a corporate career at BT to a self-employed consultant in the social enterprise field. The trip was organised by Dr Svenja Tams as part of the students' elective ‘Enterprising Careers'.
e-Transportation Challenge Day
UK researchers, industrial stakeholders and local government officials will be at the University of Bath on 4 & 5 April for the third agentcitiesUK.net Challenge Day. The goal of the event is to investigate the appropriateness for and application of agent technologies to e-transportation and intelligent transport issues in the UK. Easter Playscheme at St Martins cancelled
Due to staffing problems at St Martins Garden Primary School it is regretted that the Westwood Nursery will not be able to run the Easter Playscheme this year.

Campus road closure for Road Race
The next TeamBath Road Race will take place on campus this Sunday 13 March 2006 at 10am. This means that the entry road past the STV, the service road and the northern road past Westwood residences will be subject to closure from 10am till 11am. All visitors should use Car park A until 11am.
Renovation of ponds outside LeVel 1 Café
The Landscape Section will clean out/dredge the three ponds near LeVel 1 Cafe, commencing Saturday 11 March; all the fish will be removed and held safely off campus until the pond work has been completed.
