Major investment in our campus - message from the Deputy VC
A major three year investment in our campus will provide state-of-the-art facilities for teaching and research, a major increase in the availability of on-campus student accommodation with additional food outlets, and a new Centre for the Arts.

Personal Tutor Survey – Deadline extended to Friday 31 August
A survey for Personal Tutors has been designed to help the Senior Tutors Forum and Learning, Teaching & Quality Committee understand the experience and views of academic staff acting as Personal Tutors, and inform future developments in Personal Tutoring. As we are keen to hear from as many staff as possible, we are extending the deadline to Friday 31 August.
Open-access chemistry journal edited by Bath academics doubles its impact factor
The latest journal impact factors released by Thomson Reuters show that Chemistry Central Journal has a new impact factor of 3.28, the highest for any open access chemistry journal. Its editorial board includes three Bath chemists, Drs Simon Lewis & Matthew Jones, and Professor Tony James.
Engineering & Physical Sciences Research (EPSRC) grant to Bath researcher in chirality and catalysis
Dave Carbery has been awarded a £430k grant by EPSRC for research in the area of synthesis of helical chiral organic materials, with important applications in catalysis and in producing "greener" polymers.
Staff invited to reception to celebrate our involvement in 2012 Paralympics
Join us to celebrate our involvement in the Paralympics this year at a drinks and canapés reception on Friday 7 September. The reception will take place at Eversheds, international law firm and media hub for the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme.
Postgraduate Symposium Presentation Prize
At the recent final year postgraduate symposium, a presentation by Emily Skinner won the prize for the best talk, among a series of excellent presentations. Emily is in the final year of her PhD in the group of Professor Gareth Price.
Architecture students head to Paris for Erasmus intensive design workshop
Students and staff from Design Studio 5 went to Paris to take part in an intensive design workshop at La Maison de l’architecture en Île-de-France.

Bath researcher Emma Rich encourages citizen journalists to report on the Games
Young people across the south west are telling their own story of London 2012 thanks to two innovative projects that have given them the skills and voice to be ‘citizen journalists’.
Dr Matthew Jones in Chemistry and colleagues in Chemical Engineering (Drs Davide Mattia and Pawel Plucinski) have received £210,000 from industry for a project investigating the conversion of bioethanol into 1,3-butadiene (a major component of synthetic rubber).
Wanted! Your nail clippings (£4 each)
The Skin & Nail Research Group in Pharmacy & Pharmacology are developing new methods to deliver drugs to the nails. For their experiments they need nail clippings 8-10mm long and are happy to pay £4 for each nail clipping to thank you for your collaboration.
Nominations for Leverhulme Trust Visiting Fellowships Deadline - Friday 28 September
Departments are now invited to submit ONE Fellowship nomination to this internal competition. In particular we would welcome nominations for individuals who can help build international links with academic groups at Bath with a view to building longer term sustainable research collaborations.

The Research Development & Support Office (RDSO) would like to announce two funding opportunities to stimulate pathways to impact projects. The two funding streams are from the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).

Performance Review - conducting an effective review - Wednesday 5 September (am)
This workshop will discuss the objectives of review, the process, and forms and follow-up action plan. Participants will have the opportunity to consider and practice the skills needed to carry out the process effectively.
Performance Review - getting the most out of your review - Wednesday 5 September (pm)
This workshop aims to help those who are being reviewed for the first time to understand their role in this two-way process. During the course delegates will have the opportunity to consider the objectives and benefits of performance review, explore the process and consider what they might wish to do in preparation for their review meeting.
Recruiting casual staff - Monday 9 September
This session will explain the process from the initial job advert through to selection and appointment of student staff. This will include the paperwork, ID checks and working regulations and the skills students can gain through this employment.
The nuts and bolts of managing people Tuesday 10 September
This session is an introduction for all new line managers on the responsibilities and processes involved in managing people at the University.

THE Video competition - Win an iPad - Closes 4 September 2012
Times Higher Education magazine is running a short-video competition open to anyone who studies or works at a university as part of the official launch of the World University Rankings 2012-13.
The entrants can be individual students, students' unions, university faculty and administrative staff who are asked to make a 10-second video that completes the sentence: "My university is world-class because..."
Problems with emails being marked as 'spam/phishing'?
On the afternoon of 7 August 2012 at 16.02, a corrupt virus detecting formula was downloaded that marked genuine emails as having a virus. Due to the virus downloading onto only 1 of the 4 email relays, emails sent had a 1 in 4 chance of being rejected, so those that resent their emails may have found that they were then succesfully delivered.
We are requesting that all lecturers and researchers upgrade their software and teaching materials to SPSS 20, before Monday 31 December 2012.

Edward Carter (Pharmacology 2010) who is currently studying a postgraduate course in Pharmacy & Pharmacology has recently been to The Saban Research Institute to learn some important technology for examining the function of interesting, but bizarre sounding genes such as slug, snail and slit in developing and defending the gas diffusion surface of the lung.
