University to help South West firms work out ‘carbon footprints’ for their products
Consumers are increasingly interested in understanding the ethical and environmental impact of their personal shopping habits, so businesses are starting to react by providing more information to help shoppers make informed choices. To help with this, researchers in the Department of Chemical Engineering will be training regional companies in 'carbon labelling'.

Visiting Professor's team wins design award for polymeric bridge
A New Civil Engineer Outstanding Contribution Award has recently been presented to the Bridges Division at Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB) led by Steve Denton, a Visiting Professor in the Architecture & Civil Engineering Department for the innovative use of structural materials.

Twenty Year 10 pupils at Beechen Cliff School took part in a biofuels awareness day, which was run by our students on the University Ambassadors Scheme. The event included studying renewable energy resources, with emphasis on crop-based fuels.

1001 Nights Society brings spectacle of Middle Eastern dance to Bath
A gala festival of Persian, Egyptian and Turkish dance and music will be held in Bath Assembly Rooms on Friday 18 April. It will be followed by two days of workshops on campus. The festival is presented by the 1001 Nights Society in partnership with the Institute of Contemporary Interdisciplinary Arts (ICIA) and is supported by BANES and Arts Council England.

New Director of Human Resources is appointed
Ian Cheetham has been appointed as the next Director of Human Resources. He will join the University on 1 July 2008.

Latest Facts & Figures booklet is published
The Department of Corporate Communications is circulating copies of a new booklet giving the latest facts and figures about the University. Extra copies of the booklet, which is a useful resource for open days, exhibitions, visits to external clients and so on, are available on request from Claire Hornshaw.

Funding opportunity for new academics
EPSRC wishes to encourage new academics to build industrial collaborations early in their research career. Although CASE for new academic appointees was discontinued on 1 April 2008, this financial resource has been transferred to the Industrial CASE scheme.

Tulips in Amsterdam 25-28 April
There are a few places left on UBSA's four-day trip to Holland. The trip, which costs £195, includes free entrance to the world famous Keukenhof Gardens, visits to other attractions, three nights half board accommodation (plus free bar), and transport to and from the University via Dover. Please contact Margaret Pickering for further information or to book. The trip is open to everyone, not just UBSA members.

A36 roadworks close road till May
Work has started on roadworks at Limpley Stoke that will close the A36 to through-traffic for up to 12 weeks.

University reception desk opens in Library
A University reception desk is now open alongside the security desk in the Library. The Wessex House Security Office is now only dealing with car parking and electronic access control enquiries.

Staff Recognition Award
All staff other than academics are eligible to receive this award which recognises either individual members, or small groups, of support staff who have shown excellence in the way in which they have undertaken their duties, and who have contributed to the broader life of the University. Please consider nominating a colleague. Deadline: Wednesday 30 April.

Teaching Development Fund
As part of its Learning & Teaching Strategy the University has continued its commitment to a Teaching Development Fund. Bids are invited for the latest round of funding totalling approximately £60,000, which is due to be allocated for the academic year 2008/09 on 10 June. In support of current developments at the University, the themes of this year's allocation will be: academic induction; assessment and feedback; employability; work-based and placement learning. Deadline: Friday 2 May.

Climate change debate at Bath Abbey
Four eminent speakers (including Anil Markandya) will summarise the present state of the climate change debate, and give their views about what organisations and individuals need to do to respond. In particular there will be discussion about how Bath can move towards being an ‘eco city’ following the example of ‘Transition Towns’ Bristol and Totnes, amongst many others. Strictly Latin American
The students involved with this year's Zambia project are organising a fundraising 'Strictly Latin American Night' on Saturday 19 April, 7.30pm, at UBSA Bar. The evening will include instructor-led Latin American dance and freestyle, buffet, raffle and competition for the best dancer.

Judo Performance Research and Development Centre launched

British Judo has entered into a new partnership with the University of Bath to launch a national British Judo Performance Research and Development Centre. The work undertaken by the Centre will play an important part in the success of British Judo's performance programmes and will significantly contribute to its build up to London 2012 and beyond.

Buccs finish sixth in Division One

Team Bath Buccaneers ended their 2007/8 campaign in Slazenger England Hockey League Division One in sixth place.
