New bird flu drug promises to beat the problem of resistance
A new kind of drug to fight bird flu that will not suffer from the same kind of resistance problems as current treatments should begin clinical trials within the next three years, thanks to new funding awarded to Dr Andrew Watts in the Department of Pharmacy & Pharmacology.

Volunteers needed to help make mobiles more user-friendly
Researchers in the departments of Computer Science and Psychology are looking for local volunteers to help them design user-friendly software for the mobile phones of the future.

Funding secured for summer schools
The University has secured funding for two further years of its popular summer schools programme for young people with no family experience of higher education.

MSc in Marketing competition winner announced
Alex Walker-Sage, a 24-year-old graduate working in London, has won the competition run by the University of Bath and The Guardian for a place on the new MSc in Marketing in the School of Management.

Rare insect spotted for first time in Bath

Learning for life and leisure in Salisbury: autumn courses
The new autumn prospectus from the University of Bath's Centre for Lifelong Learning is now available. The programme of part-time courses, held at the University's partner institution Salisbury College and at Sarum College in Salisbury, runs from 25 September to 8 December.

Wessex House precinct closed this weekend
Works to refurbish the Wessex House Level precinct are being carried out over the next four weeks. As part of this process, no access will be permitted to the area this weekend.

New UK-India research fellowships
UKIERI Research Fellowships will be made available to support up to 50 Indian and UK researchers for periods of up to 12 months in each others country. The deadline for applications for bursaries beginning between now and 31 March 2007 is 30 September 2006.

Free bus tickets for journeys between Bath and Bristol
FirstBus is offering 500 free return tickets between the two cities, to be allocated on a first-come first-served basis.

The years from around 1700 to 1840 in Britain are considered by many to be one of the Golden Ages of European art.  During this period, art in Britain was transformed: a country of generally conservative and provincial tastes, served by immigrant artists from the continent, became one that produced its own outstanding painters, whose work was admired and imitated throughout Europe and North America.

A unique photography exhibition specially commissioned by Dance South West & Arts Council England South West is shown as part of the Big Dance 2006, a national celebration of dance across the UK between 15 & 23 July 2006. Leading photographer Kevin Clifford was invited to combine the beauty of the West Country with the imagination and talent of the region's most creative dance artists. ICIA at the University of Bath is the only venue in the south west to exhibit the full series of photographs.

Hundreds prepare for 2006 British Transplant Games
One of the most remarkable events on the sporting calendar got underway in Bath this week with the start of the British Transplant Games. The University is one of the venues hosting athletes from across the country, all 500 of whom have had life–saving organ transplants.

Best event yet for hockey festival
Last weekend saw the seventh Bath Mixed Hockey Festival at the University which attracted a record 24 teams all competing for the new winners trophy, provided by new sponsors MTR. The event finale saw a Team Bath XI take-on a Select Festival side and come out winners 2-0.
