8,000 miles per gallon British car enters for fuel-economy world title
Andy Green (Mechanical Engineering) will keep the spirit of the lone British inventor who takes on the world very much alive when his Team Green car competes for the title of world's most fuel-economic car in the Shell Eco-Marathon championships in France on May 19-21.

Copying nature could save us energy, study shows
New technologies that mimic the way insects, plants and animals overcome engineering problems could help reduce our dependence on energy, according to new research by Professor Julian Vincent published in the Royal Society journal Interface.

The politics of piracy - the first academic exploration of the dynamics of piracy
New research by Somalian expert, Dr Stig Jarle Hansen, has shown that over 10 per cent of all reported piracy incidents occur in the waters around Somalia which are not controlled by local warlords, resulting in calls for it to be designated as a war zone.

'Strategic Risk – a Guide for Directors'
A new guide developed using research carried out by the School of Management was launched by industry leaders in London this week. It will help company bosses manage the risks posed to their business by everything from bird flu to a loss of reputation.

Alumni & Development Office announces over £100k raised
The Alumni Fund has raised over £100,000 - against a target of £85,000 - during two telephone campaigns held in November 2005 and March 2006.

Vice-Chancellor receives prestigious Honorary Fellowship
Professor Glynis Breakwell, Vice-Chancellor of the University, has been awarded a prestigious honorary fellowship by the British Psychological Society.

Parliamentary presentation for young researcher
Amy Firth, a PhD student in the Department of Pharmacy & Pharmacology, has taken part in a special House of Commons reception for Younger Researchers in the Biosciences & Medicine.

Supplementary Prescribing course highlighted through magazine
David Thompson, a Bournemouth pharmacist and postgraduate student in the Department of Pharmacy & Pharmacology, will be writing a regular column for Pharmacy Today magazine about his experiences whilst studying on the University's new course on Supplementary Prescribing.

ESML student wins Course Expectations essay competition
The winner of the Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies' undergraduate student essay competition 2006 was Gemma Brown, a first year in the Department of European Studies and Modern Languages.

Public lecture: What has happened to the Labour Party's ideals?
Labour's unexpected 1945 election victory now looks less like the start of a new era in British politics than the concluding episode of an old one, according to a leading academic who will be giving a public lecture next Tuesday. Free tickets from Clare Henderson, ext 3400.

Happiness or human needs?
On Monday 15 May, Professor Ian Gough will give a public lecture in Bath on 'Happiness - or human needs?'. It will take place at the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution, 16-18 Queen Square at 7.30pm. All welcome.

His Excellency Giancarlo Aragona, the recently appointed Italian Ambassador to the United Kingdom, visited the University on 9 May and delivered a public lecture on the recent elections in Italy.

Swindonians to spend a day indulging a passion
Local people have the opportunity to join fellow enthusiasts attending summer dayschools at the University of Bath in Swindon on the subjects of exploring the local area, the thinking behind philosophical beliefs, writing music or designing jewellery. The dayschools will run on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 May 2006.

Funding available for enterprise sabbaticals
Academic members of staff now have the opportunity to apply for an enterprise sabbatical which will enable them to free up their teaching and administration commitments so they can work on entrepreneurial ideas and activities.

Official statement: AUT industrial action - Update
The University's senior management issued the following statement: The University is very disappointed that the Association of University Teachers (AUT) rejected a pay offer of 12.6 per cent over three years at its meeting with the employers association UCEA held on 8 May, and that the union continues to urge its members to boycott student assessment and examinations. The University is doing its best to minimise the effect on its students and believes that the vast majority of students will graduate as normal. It wishes to publicly thank all those academic staff who are working normally to ensure that their students are properly rewarded for their academic studies. It is vitally important that all students keep working normally and prepare for the examinations.

Chancellor's Prize
The deadline for nominations for this prize for the best final year undergraduate student has been extended to Thursday 18 May.

Personal Information Portal
The University's new Personal Information Portal (PIP) is now available. It creates a single point of entry for all information about a member of staff or postgraduate research student.

Rowing: Two Bath students to row for Great Britain
Adam Freeman Pask (Natural Sciences) and Marcus Bateman (Sports Technology, 2005) have been selected to represent Great Britain at Duisberg International Regatta in Germany from 11-14 May 2006. Both athletes were identified and developed by the Amateur Rowing Association's World Class Start and Potential Rowing Programme which is funded by UK Sport.
