French government let its people down during Nazi invasion, says book
A book by Hanna Diamond (European Studies & Modern Languages) which criticises
the French government for failing its citizens during the German invasion of
1940 was launched this week.

Submarine run on pedal power is given trial run before international competition
A submarine built by students from the Department of Mechanical Engineering which
runs on pedal power, was tested this week before it takes part in an international
competition in the US.
Student chosen for Roche Continents programme
Georgina Wingfield, a third year MPharmacy student, has been selected to take part in the Roche Continents programme in August.
Local school students give university a go
Pupils from Bath and Swindon will join over 100 young people from across the
south west for the chance to experience life at university, in two free week-long
summer schools at the University.
Talented children get a taste of university life
Wiltshire's gifted and talented school students will get their first taste of university life, in a three-day residential conference on campus.
Local pupils to become climate change ambassadors
Local pupils will become ambassadors for the issues of climate change, at a two-day conference for secondary schools in B&NES hosted by the University.
PubMedCentral Presentation
A representative of PubMedCentral will be making a presentation
to staff at the University on Monday 25 June 2007 from 12:30pm - 1:30pm
in the Council Chamber. The Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) asks that as
many staff as possible publishing in the life sciences and related areas
attend, given the trend towards a requirement for open access publishing

School for Health Online Open Week: 18-22 June 2007
The School for Health are running an Online Open Week next week, aimed
at prospective students throughout the world. This will provide information
on the part-time postgraduate programmes in
Healthcare Informatics, Healthcare Information Governance, Primary Care
Rheumatology, Sport & Exercise Medicine, the Professional Doctorate
in Health and - new for 2007 - Sports Physiotherapy (subject to final University
approval), as well as the research degrees that the School offers.
Bioscientists get insight into world of commercialisation

Bath Bus Station moves to Avon Street car park
From Sunday 17 June Bath Bus Station is moving to the temporary Bus Station site at Avon Street car park.
As a result of this move, some minor timetable changes will occur.

The University of Bath is committed to providing an environment where all employees and students are treated with dignity and respect, free of unlawful discrimination, victimisation, bullying or any form of harassment. The University has updated its
smoking policy to take account
of the statutory changes coming into effect in July and to
manage the impact of smoking
upon non-smokers. The Parade
and Underdeck have been designated non-smoking areas. Smoking is still permitted
in open areas, sited well away from
buildings (as a general guide four
metres or more).

designated as a smoking area
which can be used at any time.
New support for research student supervisors
A practical guide to employability & enterprise
for Deans, Heads of Departments/Schools, Directors of Studies for research
postgraduates,
Directors of Studies for MRes programmes and supervisors of research
postgraduates has been created.
Publicising the research of academic staff
Some 120 staff have already agreed to put their details up on the University's
media experts' database, and all other academic staff are encouraged
to consider adding theirs. This makes it easier to publicise the research

RICE seeks healthy men for Alzheimer's study
The Research Institute for the Care of the Elderly (RICE) is looking for
two healthy men aged between 61 and 65 to act as controls for a particular
study which matches the responses of healthy volunteers to patients who
have Alzheimer's disease. This study involves taking a memory test and giving
a blood sample, which should take about an hour. Whenever RICE work with
volunteers it aims to cover expenses and occasionally a small payment

Pickering & Okoro selected for GB squad
University of Bath student Craig Pickering has been selected to run the 100m for the Great Britain team at the SPAR European Cup later this month and also as a member of the six-strong 4×100m squad for the Super League event in Munich, Germany on 23 and 24 June. Marilyn Okoro, who is due to graduate with a degree in French and Politics this summer, is a member of the Norwich Union GB women's European Cup squad.
Team Bath retain netball superleague title in cliffhanger
TeamBath are netball's superleague champions for the second time after beating
Mavericks 53-45 and successfully defending their title at the Spectrum Arena,
Guildford, in a contest which went to the wire and was televised by Sky TV.
The team received congratulations from the Vice-Chancellor, Bath MP Don Foster,
Councillor Ian Dewey, Guy Lavender, South West England Director for 2012 Games,
and Ged Roddy, Director of Sport at the University for the terrific achievement
of retaining their national elite Superleague title in Saturday's grand final.
Five Bath judo players head for World University Games
Five University of Bath students will make up more than half of the British judo team at the World University Games this summer.
