Wearing a helmet can put cyclists more at risk
Cyclists who wear protective helmets are more likely to be struck by passing vehicles, new research by Ian Walker (Psychology) suggests.

Do you organise events on campus?
Many events are organised across the campus. If you are an organiser and you feel that your event may impact upon other University services e.g. car parking, security, accommodation, catering etc., please follow this simple guide to assist in the coordination of events.
New Starters in August 2006
A monthly update to let everyone on campus know about new members of staff. The New Starters update gives the name, job title and department of all new permanent members of staff at the University.
Positive Use of Language leaflet
The University has recently produced a 'Positive Use of Language' leaflet, which is currently being distributed to all members of staff and will be available to all students. It is an update of the ‘Non-discriminatory Language' leaflet, which has been developed in consultation with the Equalities and Diversity Committee. The leaflet assists in the University's pursuit of its corporate aims of supporting equality and diversity, and striving for understanding and mutual support within the University community, by raising awareness about how language can foster or detract from these aims, and promoting good practice amongst members of the organisation. Honorary Degree Nominations
The next round of nominations for the award of honorary degrees will be considered by the Honorary Degrees Committee on Monday 4 December 2006. The deadline for nominations is

Wessex House bank precinct closed this weekend
The Wessex House precinct near the banks and Endsleigh insurance will be closed to enable the existing floor to be removed and a new floor to be laid from 1pm on Saturday 16 September until 8am on Monday 18 September 2006. Apologies for any inconvenience.
Eastwood kitchens
The refurbishment of the kitchens in Eastwood halls of residence is now complete.
UBSA West Somerset Railway Day Trip - Saturday 23 September
Coach departs East car park Park and ride at 7:30am to West Somerset Railway where the steam train leaves at 10:25am to Minehead; arriving at 11:40am.
Return steam train departs Minehead at 3:55pm for return coach back to the University campus.

- Ian Walker (Psychology) has been in great demand about his research into how wearing a helmet increases a cyclist's chances of collision with a vehicle. He has given TV interviews on ITV West & BBC South, and has spoken on ten radio stations. The research has received extensive press coverage worldwide including: South Africa, New Zealand, Norway, Germany, Denmark, Romania, Canada, USA, India, Bahrain and Australia.
- Chris Budd (Mathematical Sciences) appeared on BBC News 24 in respect of the lecture he gave at the BA Festival of Science which claimed maths is as creative as the arts.
- Philippe Blondel (Physics) spoke on BBC Radio Humberside about the new book he has co-edited on the Solar System.
- Tom Pellereau (Mechanical Engineering alumnus) talked about the new nail file he has designed on Bath FM.
- Philip Jones (Lifelong Learning) advertised the open evenings to launch new part-time courses at the University of Bath in Swindon on GWR.

A minute's silence was held at Twerton Park on Saturday in advance of TeamBath's match with Corby Town in memory of Shane Francis Patrick Aherne who sadly passed away as the result of an accident on 2 September.
