Helena Kennedy urges degree awards audience to speak out for democracy
Baroness Helena Kennedy received her honorary degree and urged her audience to speak out for democracy and not to be afraid of fresh challenges. Another honorary graduate, Lord Joel Joffe CBE, said it was a matter of pride to receive the Doctor of Law degree because justice was central to law. He spoke of the importance of the Declaration of Human Rights and urged people to consider that “these rights are aspirational rather than common for people in many parts of the developing world”.
Winter awards ceremonies - vox pop
The winter award ceremonies took place this week in the Assembly Rooms. After their ceremony, Management students from all over the world commented how much they had enjoyed taking part.
UK-USA partnership looks at wireless opportunities
Researchers from the South of England and Southern California met in Bath this week to identify areas for potential collaboration and explore opportunities for research.
Bath academics build bridges with China
The University's partnership with Shandong University was further strengthened last month when academics from the European Research Institute (ERI) visited China to speak at a conference on 'EU institutional dynamics' and give a series of lectures to postgraduate students. The visit was sponsored by the EU-funded partnership between the ERI and the Center for European Studies (CESSU) in Shandong University.
Bath professor back from Chinese tour
Roy Jones, Director of RICE and Professor of Clinical Gerontology at the School for Health, has recently returned from China where he gave lectures in Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai on a drug treatment for moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease.
FRIENDS wins Health Service Journal award
FRIENDS, the children's mental health project, which has been pioneered in the UK by Paul Stallard (Health) and the Avon & Wilts Mental Health Partnership Trust, has won another prestigious award. The recognition comes from Health Service Journal (HSJ), who presented the project with the Mental Health Innovation award. The judges said the scheme showed good value for money, was an excellent use of non-specialist staff and the evidence base was strong.
Speed-date to success with student business plan competition
The latest student business plan competition at the University got underway this week with a speed-dating event aimed at hooking up students with local business experts who could mentor them through the contest.
Business responsibility course produces graduates who change the world
A series of innovative meetings designed to encourage south west companies to cut their greenhouse gas emissions and become more aware of the business opportunities from climate change is proving popular. School of Management launches MSc in Advanced Management Practice
Starting in October 2007, the programme combines advanced management
education with a professional work placement.
New course set up to fill engineering gap
A new Integrated Mechanical & Electrical Engineering degree that aims to produce students with the combined mechanical and electrical engineering skills that employers badly need will be run from next year at the University of Bath.

Top prize for PhD student
The European Social Investment Forum has awarded its Best PhD Thesis prize to Danyelle Guyatt (Psychology) for her thesis entitled: Identifying and Overcoming Behavioural Impediments to Long Term Responsible Investments – a Focus on UK Institutional Investors. University Chamber Choir sings at local fund-raising activities
The Choir recently performed at the Royal United Hospital and Bowood House to raise money for charity.

Significant step in pay modernisation talks
On Monday 11 December, in a meeting of the Joint Negotiating Group, the Trade
Unions agreed to ballot their members on the University's proposals for the
new pay structure. The result of the ballot will
be known in early January.
Catering refurbishments
During the Christmas break and January 2007 refurbishment work is planned for the Wessex Restaurant and Level 1 Cafe.
- Level 1 Cafe
including Dolche Vita will close from after lunch on Friday 15 December until Monday 15 January 2007.
Works include installation of external doors from the cafe to the terrace by the fish pond and a new floor in the main Cafe area.
- Wessex Restaurant will close on Thursday 21 December
and is expected to re-open from 26 January 2007 (Please note that during
this period tables may be booked for lunch in a specially reserved area of
the Claverton Rooms). The restaurant is undergoing a complete refurbishment
with alterations to the bar and private dining room to create a more modern
and flexible dining experience.
University challenges staff to save energy
The University is asking staff to help reduce energy costs and cut carbon emissions, as part of the city's Our Big Energy Challenge.
Corporate rates at Bath & Swindon hotels
Administrators in the University wishing to book accommodation in a hotel/guest house in Bath or Swindon can find the hotels giving corporate rates on the Purchasing Services website.
Retirement of Sue Cook and John Thomas
Sue Cook, Acting University Secretary and University Legal Adviser, and John Thomas, Assistant Director of BUCS, retire from the University at the end of the year. Staff are invited to wish them farewell at leaving events, both on 19 December. Professor Dai Davies

Christmas goodwill from School for Health
This year the School for Health are donating the money that has previously been spent on sending Christmas cards to stakeholders, to charity. The two charities selected in the staff vote are Send a Cow and Bath Cats & Dogs Home. Staff are also making personal donations to the charity collection in lieu of sending Christmas cards to office colleagues. Members of the School wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
