Dean of Engineering appointed to Parliamentary Committee
Gary Hawley, Dean & Medlock Chair of Engineering, has been invited to be a member of the All Party Parliamentary Renewable Transport Fuels Group. The aim of the group, comprised of 20 politicians from the major political parties, is to highlight the potential of renewable transport fuels to help reduce carbon emissions from the transport sector and increase fuel security.

Former Mayor receives Chancellor's Medal
The University of Bath has presented former Mayor of Bath and long-standing Bath & North East Somerset councillor Marian McNeir with the Chancellor’s Medal. The Medal recognises individuals who have made a valuable contribution to the life and work of the University that is not directly academic in nature.

Student thanks donors of Sir Jack Cater Postgraduate Scholarship
Ryan Hong is the first student to have benefited from the Sir Jack Cater Postgraduate Scholarship scheme for students from Hong Kong. Ryan successfully gained his MSc in Accounting & Finance in December. He thanked thank Lady Cater and the Parthenon Trust for supporting his studies through the Sir Jack Cater Scholarship.

Bath alumnus to become next Chief of Royal Airforce
Air Marshal Stephen Dalton joined the RAF after graduating with a 2.1 honours degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University. He will become the next Chief of the Air Staff in July 2009 on promotion to the rank of Air Chief Marshal.

Changes to staff appraisals
'Staff development & performance reviews' have replaced 'Appraisals'. The new scheme harmonises the approach and documentation across all staff groups and departments. It has a sharper focus on what the process is aiming to achieve, and simpler documentation so that people can concentrate on the conversation rather than merely filling out the forms.

New-look University Annual Report available to view online
The 2007/08 report includes many of the highlights and achievements of the University over the academic year. This year the report is more substantial than in previous years allowing us to include far more news and features from the past 12 months. If you would like a hard copy of the report, please contact Katharine Barker on ext 6319.

Travel insurance – new way to register trips
There has been a change to the way that overseas trips undertaken by staff and postgraduates are registered for insurance. Details of the trip must now be registered on the web-form on the insurance website.

Inaugural lecture: Grow your own building from earth, hemp and straw
Professor Peter Walker's inaugural lecture will be on the subject of research into new ways of using traditional building materials such as earth, hemp and straw as a greener choice for modern construction. Displays and Lighting Forum
The aim of the event on Tuesday 20 January is to provide attendees with an update on advances in displays and lighting technologies made by companies and universities in Wales and the West/Southwest region of England. The forum is intended as a networking opportunity and will involve a combination of formal talks, informal presentations and discussions.

Staff and students invited to attend debate on Britain’s agenda for Europe
Students and staff have the opportunity to debate the future of the UK’s relationship with the EU with two expert speakers from the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House) - the UK’s premier foreign policy think tank at an event on Wednesday 21 January.

Researchers' conference
A one-day conference entitled 'Exploring new territories' has been organised to meet the demand of growing interest in national and international interdisciplinary collaboration. Thursday 12 February.
