Researchers to develop ‘green’ cement from rice husks
Researchers from the universities of Bath and Dundee are working with collaborators in India to develop environmentally-friendly cement using waste materials such as rice husks.
Giant natural particle accelerator discovered above thunderclouds
Martin Fullekrug (Electronic & Electrical Engineering) has discovered evidence for giant natural particle accelerators that form above thunderclounds 40km above the Earth. He presented his research at the Royal Astronomical Society National Astronomy Meeting (NAM 2010) in Glasgow on 14 April.

Goodbye 'sick notes' , hello 'fit notes' from your GP
A new system of ‘doctor’s certificates’ for employees who are absence from work due to ill health has been implimented. Individuals must still visit their General Practitioner (GP) if they have been off sick for more than a week to obtain a ‘doctor’s certificate’ (MED3), but the form that they receive will be different.
Images of Research
Images of Research is an annual event for research staff, students and academics to communicate their research using photographic images. All entries will be displayed in a public exhibition to be held at the Octagon in Milsom Place from Thursday 13 May. An exhibition opening reception will be in the evening of Thursday 13 May.

Margareta Kern Guest | ICIA Art Space 1 | Residency: Until 18 June. Open Monday -Saturday 10am-5pm
Over the next few months, artist Margareta Kern takes up residence in the Department of Social & Policy Sciences. The residency is organised by ICIA and is presented as part its 2010 programme of events that explore ‘the place of work’. Whilst in residence, Kern uses Art Space 1 as a site of production for her new installation, Guest, which will develop and change over the course of exhibition. Kern will engage staff and students of the University community to explore, compare and contrast her own artistic methods of enquiry with those used in the sociology of work.

Artist-in-residence Deborah Robinson enters the hidden world of the aquatic lab in the University’s Department of Biology & Biochemistry. Catching glimpses of researchers going about their daily work, Robinson captures the strange poetic beauty of this see-through world – from fish, water and tank, to the lens of the camera itself.

Moroccan Melodies with Hassan Erraji | Studio 1, ICIA Arts Barn | Wednesday 21 April, 6pm-7.30pm
Working with voice or melodic instrument, musician, composer and singer songwriter Hassan Erraji introduces the entrancing polyrhythmic traditions of southern Morocco. Explore how the beat and rhythm work as a basis for a melody and song.

Uni of Bath-based wheelchair tennis player breaks into world top-20
Louise Hunt, a University of Bath-based wheelchair tennis player, smashed through her previous bests to earn career high world singles and doubles rankings after completing back-to-back tournaments in South Africa, with her women’s singles world ranking breaking the world top 20 barrier for the very first time.
TeamBath netball finish home campaign in style
TeamBath netball played their last home game of the season against Leeds Carnegie at the University on Saturday night (10 April) and secured a convincing 62-44 win.
Search for future Paralympic stars comes to the South West
ParalympicsGB today called out to Paralympic hopefuls to attend their next talent day hosted by the University, designed to find people in the South-West who have the determination to become members of the British Paralympic team for London 2012 and Rio 2016. The University, which was announced as the venue for the GB team’s pre-London 2012 training camp last year, will host the Paralympic Potential day on Wednesday 12 May.
