Students’ Union collect gold award at Westminster
At a ceremony in Westminster’s Porticullis House, the Students’ Union received a national gold award for providing Bath students with an excellent student experience. It is one of only four students’ unions across the country to achieve gold, awarded by Student Union Evaluation Initiative (SUEI).

University wins JISC funding to support & develop research data management
The University has been awarded funding by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) to support and develop Research Data Management across the institution. Research360@Bath is a project to develop policies, infrastructure and training resources to help researchers to get the most out of their research data, realise the benefits of good data management practice and comply with funder requirements.
KTA workshop report: Building relationships with external organisations
Dr Caron King, from Kingswood Plus Ltd, ran a successful workshop on ‘Communicating Your Research to Business’ on 7 December, funded by the University’s EPSRC Knowledge Transfer Account. Dr King outlined the preparation that can help you make the most out of collaborative relationships, including establishing beforehand exactly what you want out of the relationship and why the external organisation should care.
VC hosts SPS reception to celebrate Queen’s Anniversary Prize
The Department of Social & Policy Sciences celebrated the Queen’s Anniversary Prize award, at a reception hosted by the Vice-Chancellor. The award-winning entry, Influential research into child poverty and support for vulnerable people, was based on our research, teaching and external engagement in social policy and international development which goes back over 30 years.
Applications are invited for the David Parkin Visiting Professorship for the academic year 2012/13.

Our first Celebrating Learning & Teaching publication highlights some examples of how Bath delivers excellence. A printed version of the publication will be distributed widely across the University in the next fortnight and individual articles will be published within the Better@Bath web pages.
Managing change – seeking success stories
Have you been through a change process recently that has some positive lessons we can all learn from? According to the Staff Survey, many staff feel that the University could be better at managing change, so we are working in various ways to enhance individual and collective skills across the institution.
A vacancy for an Academic Staff Development Programmes Administrator in the Learning & Teaching Enhancement Office (LTEO) has arisen and has now been advertised on the University website. The closing date for this post is Thursday 5 January 2012.

The University has created the new full-time post of Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Internationalisation) to lead the international development of the University and to raise it's international profile.
Richard Farrow retirement party
Richard Farrow, financial accountant, (finance office) is due to retire at the end of December. Finance staff are organising a get-together and would like as many of Richard’s friends and colleagues from across the University to join them in wishing him well over a glass of mulled wine and mince pies in the Wessex restaurant today (Friday 16 December) at 3.30pm.

Help the homeless this Christmas
This year Student Services would like to celebrate Christmas by inviting you all, students and staff, to bring a gift for the homeless people of Bath to the Student Services Centre in 4 West.
As a measure to improve the speed of the wireless network and provide a better user experience, BUCS will be phasing out the slower 802.11b wireless standard at the end of Semester 1 (4 February 2012). After the transition is complete, only the faster 802.11g and n standards will be in use.

The Complexity of Complexity: A one-day inter-disciplinary seminar Monday 19 December

Training & development
Mental health first aid - numerous dates
This is a 12-hour course consisting of four modules spread over two days. It comprises of a mixture of presentations and participation and is accredited by the Royal Society of Public Health. Participants are required to attend the whole course in order to receive a certificate of attendance.
Researcher development courses
The Researcher Development Unit (RDU) manages a large programme of courses and events for the skills and career development of researchers.

Susan Pointer (BSc European Studies & Modern Languages) has become director of public policy and government relations for Google Inc.
The Supeme Council for Information and Communication Technology has announced the appointment of Dr Eiman Al Ansari (PhD Politics and Economics of Education) as manager of its recently formed Consumer Affairs Department.

Malcolm Arnold wins Sports Journalist Association Outstanding Contribution to Sport award
Athletics coach Malcolm Arnold has won the Sports Journalist Association Outstanding Contribution to Sport award. He was presented his award by World, European and Commonwealth champion hurdler Dai Greene at an award ceremony in London
on Wednesday 7 December.
