Plans for new environmentally-friendly 4W unveiled
The University is aiming for an “excellent” rating from a widely-used environmental assessment system for the new building, a five-storey structure which will be occupied by several University departments and will have lecture space for 210 people.

Major grant to support fundraising at University
The University has been awarded a grant of £125,000 to develop a range of fundraising activities that will help support teaching, research and campus facilities. This is the highest amount awarded to any UK university, and is given as part of a £7.5 million scheme from DFES and UUK aimed at kick-starting fundraising activities in the HE sector.

VC appointed as new Chair for Bath Festivals Trust/City of Festivals
Professor Glynis Breakwell, Vice-Chancellor of the University, has been confirmed as Chair designate of the company which will take forward the City of Festivals initiative and the work of Bath Festivals Trust.

Honour for Bath Professor
Harry Daniels, Professor of Education, has recently been offered two appointments:
• Adjunct Professor, Centre for Learning Research, Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia
• Research Professor, Centre for Human Activity Theory, Kansai University, Osaka, Japan

Seminar on the role of education & learning in sustainable development
The United Nations is challenging educational policy-making by highlighting Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) as a matter of global importance. This week the Centre for Research in Education & the Environment hosted a seminar on its theory and practice.

BBC Horizon Special: Winning Gold in 2012
Sport and Exercise Science student, Craig Pickering, will feature in the BBC Horizon Special programme about young talented athletes on Saturday 18 March at 9.15 pm, speaking about his life and training. Craig, who is coached by Malcolm Arnold, trains with Jason Gardener at the University's Sport Training Village. Craig is one of the most talented British sprinters in recent years. Last summer, he won 100 m European Junior (Under 20 years) Championship in Kaunas, Lithuania. His season best time of 10.22 s was the fourth fastest time at senior GB ranking in 2005.

INFORMATION

Detecting plagiarism
All members of staff with an interest in detecting and deterring plagiarism are invited to attend a short lunchtime demonstration and feedback session on the JISC Plagiarism Detection Service (PDS) being held on Tuesday 21st March from 1.30-2.00pm in 6W 1.1. The presentation, which will be given by staff from the Library who manage the system, will demonstrate how to submit students' work to the PDS and will explain the 'originality reports' produced by the system. There will be an opportunity for staff to give feedback on the system and to ask questions. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided. (One third of all students admit to cheating - Guardian 16.3.06 )

Do you use web forms?
BUCS and the Web Team have received so many requests to create forms for webpages recently that the more cost-effective approach of buying in software that will allow staff and students to create these forms themselves is being considered. Before this can be done, staff and students who need to use web forms are requested to send details of how much this software would be used and in what ways. Please contact sw-response by Friday 24 March.

Mark Foster announces retirement
Swimmer Mark Foster has revealed that Melbourne 2006, his sixth Commonwealth appearance, will be his last. The 35-year-old, who has enjoyed an international career spanning 21 years, will retire after the forthcoming World Swimming Championships in Shanghi.
