Sperm proteome gives “tantalising glimpse” towards the origin of sex
The first ever catalogue of the different types of proteins found in sperm could help reveal the origins of sex and explain some of the mysteries of infertility, say scientists in the Department of Biology & Biochemistry.

New imaging suite unveiled in Biology & Biochemistry
Professor Chris Jennison, Dean of the Faculty of Science, unveiled a new microscope facility in the Department of Biology & Biochemistry last week that will give researchers greater flexibility in carrying out their plant and insect research.

Climate change action plan
A plan to cut Swindon's carbon dioxide emissions by 20 per cent has been launched at the University of Bath in Swindon's Oakfield campus by Geoff Hammond, who chaired of the steering group.

World without wires: opportunities in personal wireless technology
Entrepreneurs, investors and researchers will be coming together to discuss opportunities for start-up businesses in the wireless technology sector at the latest Silicon Southwest event taking place in Swindon next week (24 November 2006).

International education conference in China
Several members of the Centre for the study of Education in an International Context (CEIC), in the Department of Education, gave research papers at the recent conference held in Shanghai, China. The conference, on "Educating for Global Citizenship", was attended by participants from across the world, all of whom are involved in research in international education, and they were joined by senior colleagues from within China.

University's research is featured in Time Magazine
The University's Clever vehicle research is mentioned in the current edition of Time magazine, the internationally-renowned publication. They rate it as one of the best inventions of 2006.

Youngsters hatch a cunning business plan
The Innovation Centre helped set-up and run a Dragon's Egg Competition with B&NES Economic Development. The competition was inspired by the hit BBC series Dragon's Den, in which would-be entrepreneurs make bids for funding to a panel of hard-nosed experts. Ron Humphreys from the VC's Office was on the panel of judges. The event received media coverage with interviews on Bath FM & GWR and an article in the Bath Chronicle.

Bath wins Students' Union of the Year Award
BUSU came in ahead of the Universities of Dundee, Nottingham and Leicester to win the award for Elements nightclub and the Plug Bar. Now in its 14th year, the trade magazine, Club Mirror, hold the awards annually to recognise excellence and good practice.

Student business gives cocktail parties a new twist
Cocktail parties could become all the rage in the West this winter thanks to a new business set up by two University of Bath students which takes the hassle out hosting a party.

Service offers escape from gap year “package holiday” volunteer experiences
Many gap year students are missing out on the chance to help people in the developing world because the businesses behind “package holiday” volunteering placements have priced them out of the opportunity, says the University of Bath student behind a new travel service.

An international feast in Bath
Students from the University of Bath joined in with the local community last Saturday to put on the most successful Bath International Evening since it started, 16 years ago. St Mark's Community Hall in Widcombe welcomed over 200 people to the event, which aims to celebrate the diversity of cultures in Bath.

Orders should be placed with the Print Unit by Friday 24 November for delivery week beginning 4 December.

New Starters in October 2006
The New Starters update gives the name, job title and department of all new permanent members of staff at the University who started in the previous month.

University of Bath in Swindon newsletter
The Autumn issue of the Newsletter of the University of Bath in Swindon is now available, featuring information about recent activities and achievements at the Oakfield campus.
