Project explores link between acne treatment and depression
A new £365,000 project led by
Sarah Bailey and Michelle Lane
(Pharmacy & Pharmacology) is set to investigate how a drug used to treat severe acne may cause depression.
New courses to tackle region's engineering skills shortage
Two new vocational training courses in engineering will launch in Swindon and Wiltshire colleges in September, helping to tackle the region's acute engineering skills shortage.
Case study provides example of KTP success
A case study highlighting a successful Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) involving the Department of Chemical Engineering is now available on the Research & Innovation Services website. Edwin Crezee, the KTP ‘associate', worked with Barry Crittenden and Semali Perera from the department in developing a new process for the recovery of solvent vapours from the air in factories. This enabled the company partner, Mast Carbon Technology Limited, to develop a novel solvent recovery filter system which should lead to a significant increase in turnover.
International final within reach for students
Three University of Bath students have successfully reached stage two of the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2007 UK finals, bringing them one step closer to the contest's world finals in Seoul, Korea. E-Mentoring inspires Swindon school students
School students across Swindon have been inspired to think about going on to university, thanks to an e-mentoring scheme run by the University.
School pupils learn about the fun of chemistry
Around 140 pupils aged 11 to 13 from schools in the West of England enjoyed one of two day-long, fun-filled ‘festivals' of chemistry at the University this week.
Seminars in eco-politics and good governance
Staff, students and local people are invited to discuss eco-politics and evidence-based policy in two seminars at the University. The first seminar (Monday 21 May, 2.30-6pm) will introduce a political and research agenda for an era where the environment has moved to the centre of public debate, but unsustainable practices and lifestyles are still being defended. At the second seminar (Tuesday 29 May, 4.30pm), Dr John Turnpenny from the University of East Anglia's Centre for Social & Economic Research on the Global Environment will present Joined up (good) governance? Links and missing links between evidence and policy.

Security Office closes for refurbishment
The Security Office on Level 2 of Wessex House will close for refurbishment between 18 May and 4 June 2007.

Late May Bank Holiday Playscheme
The Playscheme
will run from Tuesday 29 May to Friday 1 June at St Martins Garden Primary School from 8.30am-5.30pm. A range of indoor and outdoor activities are planned.
Cost: £8 a day for students; £15 a day for staff. Parents are welcome to use the Care4 Voucher Scheme.

Ben's athletic achievements recognised with award
Teenage sprinter Ben Rushgrove earned a Nationwide Achievement Award for his stunning performances at the Visa Paralympic World Cup. The 19-year-old Sports Performance student was named winner of the Male Athletics award after sprinting to two gold medals and a world record at the Visa Paralympic World Cup in Manchester.
