The key to teaching DNA to all age groups
A simple model created by Jonathan Cox (Chemistry) could be the key to teaching people of all ages about DNA.

Snowboard design wins student engineering prize
A design to help snowboarders use ski lifts by Chris Holden, a fourth-year Mechanical Engineering student, has won the Royal Academy of Engineering's Principles of Engineering Design prize.

A-level results: the race for clearing places
Despite required entry level qualifications remaining high within the University (the average student needs at least two As and one B at A-level), many courses met their home and overseas targets in advance. Clearing is currently underway for the limited number of courses with space available.

Volunteers sought: Take a break from exercise
Researchers in the School for Health are investigating whether a one-week “holiday” from exercise alters biological markers and risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease. They are currently looking for non-smoking, male volunteers aged 45–65 years to help them with their study.

Works of Genius: I.K. Brunel's engineering achievements & their legacy
A symposium jointly organised by English Heritage, the University of Bath and Brunel 200 will take place on campus on 15 September 2006. On the date of Brunel's death, the symposium will bring together practitioners and researchers from different disciplines to discuss and present the findings of recent research on topics such as Brunel's adventurous designs for bridges, his use of cast iron, his spectacular ships and his relationships with other engineers.

Discounted lifelong learning courses for staff
There is now a range of discounts for staff attending all lifelong learning courses, including foreign languages, NEBOSH & DfLL courses.

Fire hazard: Dell Notebook/Laptop battery recall
Please note that Dell are recalling some laptops because of problems with their batteries, which can overheat and become a fire risk. This does not apply to desktop computers.

Closure of the underdeck
Due to emergency repairs at the Wessex House end of the underdeck, the roadway running from east to west in the area of Wessex House is closed with immediate effect. There is no exit from below Wessex House into Quarry Road. Westbound traffic is not affected.

Wessex House precinct closed this weekend
Works to refurbish the Wessex House Level 2 precinct are being carried out over the next four weeks. As part of this process, no access will be permitted to the banks/Endsleigh Insurance area this weekend.

Car Park G Closure
Car park G, south of the Sports Training Village, will be closed on Thursday 24 August for essential resurfacing work. It is expected that the work will be completed in one day, weather permitting.

Staff are reminded that a corporate PowerPoint template and style guide are available on the Marketing & Communications website.

Manual staff member interested in equalities & diversity
The Equalities and Diversity Committee is looking for an enthusiastic member of manual staff to engage positively with issues relating to equalities and diversity, and to take an active part in moving forward the University’s agenda in these areas.

The years from around 1700 to 1840 in Britain are considered by many to be one of the Golden Ages of European art.  During this period, art in Britain was transformed: a country of generally conservative and provincial tastes, served by immigrant artists from the continent, became one that produced its own outstanding painters, whose work was admired and imitated throughout Europe and North America.

A unique photography exhibition specially commissioned by Dance South West & Arts Council England South West is shown as part of the Big Dance 2006, a national celebration of dance across the UK between 15 & 23 July 2006. Leading photographer Kevin Clifford was invited to combine the beauty of the West Country with the imagination and talent of the region's most creative dance artists. ICIA at the University of Bath is the only venue in the south west to exhibit the full series of photographs.

TeamBath triathlete Julie Dibens won the women's Xterra off–road triathlon in Denmark by more than eight minutes.

A third place finish in the final European Cup open water swimming event of the year was enough to give talented TeamBath swimmer Stefanie Biller an overall bronze medal for the 2006 season.
