University launches new website to mark its 40th anniversary
The University has launched a new website as part of the celebrations to mark its 40th anniversary this year. The website encourages staff and students, both past and present, and local residents to take a trip down memory lane through photographs and the personal memories of those who watched a university being created, not just with bricks but ambitions and ideas too.

B&NES Local Plan - Green Belt boundary
The Inspector appointed to consider objections to the Bath and North East Somerset Local Plan is recommending the Green Belt boundary should be substantially amended where it runs through the middle of existing buildings at the Sports Training Village, and through playing fields that pre-date the University.

ICIA Arts Awards 2006
The University celebrated the achievements of its arts and cultural life over the last year at its annual ICIA Arts Awards in the University's Claverton Rooms on Thursday (11 May).

New tool gives better insight into effects of dementia
Medical professionals will now be able to detect subtle changes in the quality of life of people with mild dementia, thanks to a new self-assessment technique that will help improve the timing of additional help and support.

Forensic science: “The Mystery at Salty Towers”
Around 120 pupils from 30 local schools in the west of England had the chance to prove themselves as chemists at the Salters' Festival of Chemistry at the University this week.

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships: Collaborate to Innovate
A lively seminar on the theme “Innovation through Collaboration” took place in Bath last week, showcasing the achievements of eight Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, which involve organisations across the South West region.

Demand in Swindon leads to new course for adult learners
Local demand has resulted in a new course for adults considering studying at university. The free course, run by the University of Bath in Swindon, will give people the opportunity to find out about life as an adult learner from current students and University staff. The course will run from Monday 22 to Friday 26 May.

Swindon residents invited to University open day
Local people are invited to visit the University of Bath in Swindon's Oakfield campus to find out about the range of courses and evening classes on offer. Visitors will have the opportunity to chat to course organisers, meet current students, take a tour of the campus and pick up a prospectus. The open day will run from 10am-noon, Wednesday 24 May.

Funding available for enterprise sabbaticals
Academic members of staff now have the opportunity to apply for an enterprise sabbatical which will enable them to free up their teaching and administration commitments so they can work on entrepreneurial ideas and activities.

Partial Closure of Underdeck
Due to essential maintenance works the underdeck will be closed to vehicles for various periods between 24 May to 26 May. This is to allow contractors to inspect and assess for corrosion the underdeck steelwork using a mobile access platform. It is intended to make the roadway one-way, east to west on one day; and west to east on another day, with the third day as a contingency day in case the inspections are not complete. Adequate signage and traffic control lights will be in place on the days to warn traffic as appropriate.

Lunchtime lecture: Science & the media
Scientists who are interested in the portrayal of their subject in the media will be able to hear from two leading science media ‘protagonists' at a special lunchtime lecture organised by the University Press Office on Monday 22 May at 12.15 in lecture theatre 3 East 2.1.

Rehabilitation conference to be held in Bath
Rehab.NET, the School for Health, and the Bath and Swindon RDSU will be hosting a conference on community rehabilitation on 20 November 2006 at Bailbrook House in Bath.

TeamBath footballers aim to make amends for Arsenal's defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League final when they take on Spanish University side Alicante next Tuesday (23 May) on home turf in the Friendship Cup (Copa de la Amistad). The big match kicks off at 7.30pm at the Sports Training Village and entry is FREE from 6pm onwards. There will be a BBQ on the terrace overlooking the pitch and an after-party at Moles nightclub with a £1 off entry for anyone attending the game.

Rowing
Adam Freeman Pask (Natural Sciences) and Marcus Bateman (Sports Technology, 2005) achieved third places in their respective events representing Great Britain at Duisberg Regatta in Germany between 11-14 May 2006. Both athletes were identified and developed by the Amateur Rowing Association's World Class Start and Potential Rowing Programme which is funded by UK Sport.
