Test evaluates English language skills of foreign medics
Language specialists at the University have developed a suite of tests that evaluate the English language skills of different healthcare professionals seeking work in the UK.

Mech Eng student wins Mercia engineering award
Frances Baxter, a second year postgraduate student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, attended the Awards Livery Dinner at the Ironmonger's Hall, Barbican, this week, where she was presented with the Mercia Award.

Jellyfish fun for school pupils
The science behind glow-in-the-dark jellyfish will be explored by 100 school pupils from across the UK in two ‘chemistry camps' at the University.

Young people get creative at University
Young people in Swindon will let loose their imagination at two week-long creative art workshops taking place at the Oakfield campus.

Pupils learn from Olympic hockey ace
Young local pupils have been learning more about the sport of hockey with University of Bath coach and South African Olympic player Jody Paul, who said the children were "very enthusiastic, attentive and eager to learn".

INFORMATION

New incentives scheme for academic consultancy starts 1 August 2007
Following extensive consultation the University has approved a new incentives scheme for academics to carry out consultancies through the University, starting from 1 August 2007.

University achieves 'Positive about Disability' standard
The University has been awarded the use of the 'Positive about Disabled People' symbol, which demonstrates our commitment to employing people with a disability.

Executive Committee decisions
The summary notes of the Executive Committee held on 13 June 2007 are now available online.

Financial procedures for year end
Every year, the University has to prepare financial accounts for the year to 31 July. The Finance Office has overall responsibility for preparing the accounts but each department is responsible for ensuring that its finances are up to date and that all necessary data is supplied to the Finance Office.

SYMPOSIA & EXHIBITIONS

Pleasure Gardens, Past, Present, and Future | The Holburne Museum, Monday 10 September 2007
An interdisciplinary symposium exploring the eighteenth century pleasure garden and examining its legacy and future. The symposium coincides with the Holburne Museum exhibition Canaletto & the English Pleasure Garden, which is currently running till 30 September. The topics covered in the symposium complement the exhibition, which explores the phenomenon of the Georgian pleasure gardens. The symposium will also launch the new MSc/Diploma in the Conservation of Historic Gardens & Cultural Landscapes, which will commence at the Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering in October 2007.

8th International Conference on the Social Context of Death, Dying and Disposal | University of Bath, 12-15 September 2007
A major multi-disciplinary conference covering all aspects of death, dying and bereavement, including a rich range of arts-related contributions, DDD8 will draw together established and new scholars and practitioners from around the globe. DDD8 is a collaboration between the Centre for Death & Society and the Institute for Contemporary Interdisciplinary Arts at the University. The ICIA exhibition Resort, which runs until 12 October, explores the difficulty of making art following traumatic historical events.

Purchasing Services Customer Satisfaction Survey
In an effort to improve the services that Purchasing Services offer to University departments, the Office is introducing, and will be reporting on, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that seek to measure satisfaction with the services provided. In order to do this effectively you are invited to complete a short survey.

Student Services Staff Survey 2007
To help monitor and develop the effectiveness of the student services provided by the Counselling Service, the Learning Support Service, the Student Money Service and the Head of Student Services' Office, staff are asked to take a few minutes to complete the Student Services Staff Survey 2007.

Skills Training & Research Supervisors Survey (STaRSS) 2007
The Graduate Office is requesting that Research Supervisors complete a survey which asks whether recent changes and challenges have impinged upon research degree study.

University of Bath students Craig Pickering and Ryan Scott combined to help Great Britain strike gold in the 4×100m relay at the European Under-23 Championships.

Go Play Rugby scheme launched
A campaign to encourage former rugby players to return to playing the game has received its national launch at the University of Bath. The Go Play Rugby scheme is the largest recruitment drive ever mounted by a sport in the UK and its launch by the RFU was timed to coincide with build-up to this year's Rugby World Cup.

England Rugby are ‘up to speed' says Ashton
England head coach Brian Ashton said his training squad are ‘up to speed' with where they wanted to be in the run-up to the Rugby World Cup. The squad are training at the University of Bath.
