£1.8 million grant could make aircraft production more efficient
Mechanical engineers led by

Tick warning for Bath's woodland walkers
Walkers in the woodlands around Bath have been advised to check for bloodsucking ticks when they get home, following the discovery by scientists in the Department of Biology & Biochemistry that a significant number of the area's ticks area are infected with the bacterium that causes Lyme borreliosis.

The archives of 11 of the UK's most important scientists are to be preserved for posterity by the National Cataloguing Unit for the Archives of Contemporary Scientists, based at the University.

Breaking the language barrier – new courses for work and recreation
Enrolment has opened for evening and daytime language courses for people who live and work in the Bath area. The courses, offered by the Foreign Language Centre, start in early October and be run in venues around town.

Changes to personal homepage addresses
The University website will shut down for three hours between 7am and 10am on 26 July to allow essential upgrade work to be carried out on the server. As part of this upgrade, the following domain changes will take place:

Closure of section of East car park
From 24 - 28 July, repairs will be carried out in East car park requiring the contractors to close the top section of car park by the Students' Union bays for plant and materials.
Closure of SCR lounge
The SCR lounge will be closed all day on Monday 24 July for carpet cleaning.
Purchasing office furniture from agreed suppliers
Anyone intending to purchase items of office furniture in the next few months is requested to do so through the Purchasing Services Team. Should any suppliers contact departments directly saying they are the University's "preferred supplier", please report it to the Purchasing Team. Thank you.
Academic staff
vote in favour of pay deal
UCU members have voted in favour of a pay deal that increases salaries for academic and related staff by 10.37 per cent over the next two years.
The third year of the deal provides a minimum increase of 2.5% and further negotiations when an independent review of university finances has reported.
UNISON members accept pay deal
UNISON members in higher education have overwhelmingly said yes to a deal which will see the wages of the lowest paid rise by 15.5 per cent.

Sophos experts have warned of a spam campaign that poses as a BBC breaking news report about the death of Russian President Vladimir Putin, but is really an attempt by hackers to infect computer users with a Trojan horse. Do not open the link which supposedly leads to the BBC new site.

Britain's Alan Bircher and Germany's Stefanie Biller have a long distance relationship with a difference – the Bath-based pair are two of the world's top young long distance open water swimmers.
