The next Bath Science Café will take place on Monday 12 December and will explore whether there is any hope for the continuation of western civilisation as oil production declines.

Better@Bath: A celebration of learning and teaching - an invitation

Bath wins newly-awarded Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with Hydraulic Projects Ltd
The University has been awarded a KTP with Hydraulic Projects Ltd, (Hypro) a company which designs, manufactures, assembles and distributes quality hydraulic valves, actuators and pumps from their site in Dawlish, South Devon.

Associate recruited for Seiche KTP
The Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) team are pleased to announce the recruitment of Associate Ladipo Baruwa, to work on a KTP with Seiche Measurements Ltd, a company at the forefront of passive acoustic monitoring and sound and vibration engineering.

Ideas sandpit 3: identity and security Application deadline Monday 12 December

David Parkin Visiting Professorship 2012/13
Applications are invited for the David Parkin Visiting Professorship for the academic year 2012/13. The Esther Parkin Trust provides annual funding of up to £20k to support this award. It provides an excellent opportunity to attract an outstanding colleague from outside the UK and to develop ongoing research and publication partnerships.

Faculty Learning Communities kickstart blue sky thinking on digital literacies
Last week saw the creation of the first Faculty Learning Community (FLC) for the Faculty of Science, as part of the newly funded Professionalism in the Digital Environment (PriDE) project. Bringing both academic and administrative staff together with student representatives, this FLC was the third of four set up to explore the issues surrounding the digital environment and digital literacies.

The University was delighted to host the national Heads of e-Learning Forum (HeLF) on 22 November 2011. Welcomed by Bernie Morley, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Teaching), over 30 e-Learning experts representing higher education institutions attended the forum.

Changes to processes for access to IT systems and Person Finder from 1 December
The process for putting individuals onto Person Finder has been reviewed and revised in order to give correct access to different University IT systems and related software licencing issues.

New public lectures now available as podcasts
These podcasts from the University's public lecture series feature leading names from the worlds of science, humanities and engineering talking about the latest research in their field. The podcasts are downloaded around 250,000 times a year by people in 50 countries.

Anti-Bribery Policy
Following the introduction of the Bribery Act 2010, which came into force on 1 July 2011, the University has developed an Anti-Bribery Policy which applies to all staff and students.

Do you suffer from headaches?
Researchers at the Centre for Pain Research are interested in seeing how headaches may affect how well people can concentrate and perform tasks. They would therefore like to hear from healthy adults who experience occasional headaches, but are not on any prescription medication or seeking medical help for your headaches. All participants will receive £25 for their time.

MASH "Design a Dingbat" competition
MASH is running a design competition, open to everyone at the University, to come up with an original Dingbat based around the mathematical symbol π ('pi').

University carol service Wednesday 7 December
Led by the chaplaincy team, this popular annual event at Bath Abbey features the University chamber choir, organist Peter King and conductor Michael Painting. Mental health first aid Numerous dates
This is a 12-hour course consisting of four modules spread over two days. It comprises of a mixture of presentations and participation and is accredited by the Royal Society of Public Health. Participants are required to attend the whole course in order to receive a certificate of attendance.

Researcher development courses
The Researcher Development Unit (RDU) manages a large programme of courses and events for the skills and career development of researchers.

This workshop will discuss the objectives of review, the process and forms and follow-up action plan. Participants will have the opportunity to consider and practice the skills needed to carry out the process effectively.

Performance review - getting the most out of your review Monday 5 December (pm)
This workshop aims to help those who are being reviewed for the first time to understand their role in this two-way process. During the course delegates will have the opportunity to consider the objectives and benefits of performance review; explore the process and consider what they might wish to do in preparation for their review meeting.
