Bath researchers study how cancer cells come unstuck
Andrew Chalmers and Paul Whitley (Biology & Biochemistry) have started a three-year study into the junctions that hold cells together, giving insight into how cancer cells can break off and spread to other parts of the body. The research may lead to discovering ways of preventing life-threatening secondary tumours forming.
Paxman to quiz Bath students on University Challenge
A team of four students from Bath are to go head-to-head against students from the London School of Economics on the BBC2 quiz show University Challenge. The show will be aired on Bank Holiday Monday, 25 August (8-8.30pm).
English Language Centre hosts visit from Fukuoka University Vice-President
To mark the excellent relationship between the Universities of Bath and Fukuoka, Japan, an official visit was made to our campus last week by Fukuoka University’s Vice-President Professor Mamoto.
Porter Jamie wins 100km Mongolian ultra marathon by running to work every day
University porter Jamie Roberts has won a 100km ultra marathon in Mongolia by running to work every day. He is now planning to move to Mongolia and marry his fiancée, Mongolian athlete Suvdmaa Ichinkhorloo.
University to help women entrepreneurs achieve business goals
The University is hosting two free events to provide information about courses designed to help women set up in business. The events will be held in Carpenter House, Broad Quay, Bath on 4 & 5 September.

UK School Games to take place on campus
Some 1500 elite young athletes of school age are set to compete at the third UK School Games and will be resident on campus for the duration of the Games (28-31 August). Apologies if staff and students experience disruptions to travel and parking on campus. The catering outlets may also be more busy than usual.
Blackwell to be new campus book supplier
Blackwell are to provide a flexible service, giving staff and students online access to over three million titles, compared to the thousands it is possible to stock in a traditional campus bookshop. There will also be a temporary bookshop on campus
Times Higher Education subscription offer
The THE has set up a special offer for departments and individual members of staff who wish to take out an annual subscription to the magazine.
Tutors: University's Academic Review (Appeals) procedure
The University's Academic Review (Appeals) procedure has changed. Please could tutors make students aware of this on their return to campus.
Alumnus offers to fund new scholarship
The Suzanne Admiraal Scholarship has been set up to remember the sister of alumnus Richard Admiraal (BSc Management, 1982). Suzanne started her studies in the School of Management in 1977 but sadly died during her first term.
Richard, who also came to Bath to study Management and graduated in 1982, is keen to support our outstanding students: his scholarship will cover tuition fees for one student studying Business Administration, beginning in 2009/10.
Bus pass price increase delayed until 1 September
STA Travel and the Students' Union have negotiated with First Bus so that they will defer their fare increase until 1 September.
Claim back fuel surcharge refund from British Airways & Virgin Atlantic
If you, or your department, bought a British Airways (BA) or a Virgin Atlantic (VA) ticket between 11 August 2004 and 23 March 2006 you/the University may be entitled to a partial refund of the fuel surcharge. Passengers (or organisations for whom they work where costs have already been reclaimed from the organisation), are now invited to make a claim under the settlement of litigation against BA/Virgin relating to their fixing of fuel surcharges.

- The monthly Introduction to the University of Bath for new staff has been updated and improved and now includes sessions targeted at specific staff groups. Please could all managers/supervisors encourage their newly appointed academic, research, administrative, clerical and technical staff to attend. New staff receive their invitation in the pack sent to them before they start work. There is a tear-off slip to indicate their preferred option and date.

Sport
Silver medal for University-based athlete
Heather Fell, a pentathlete who trains at the Sports Training Village, has won a silver medal in Beijing. Results for other Team Bath athletes participating in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games can be found on the Team Bath Beijing website.
Free family fun day
The University will be one of the hosts of the UK School Games to be held from 28-31 August 2008. We will be hosting four of the nine sports on the Games programme: athletics, fencing, table tennis and volleyball. As part of the Games, there will also be a free family fun day taking place at the Recreation Ground, Bath, on Saturday 30 August. The event will showcase many sports, including a rugby match between Bath United and the Cornish All Blacks at 3pm.
Bath chosen as intensive swimming training centre for London 2012
The University of Bath has been announced as one of only five UK centres to host an Intensive Training Centre for Swimming (ITC). The successful candidates were revealed by British Swimming and are to become part of a nationwide network of centres designed to provide a daily world class training environment for swimming development aimed at building on the success of Beijing 2008 while looking towards the London 2012 Games.
Team Bath FC face their toughest task of the season so far this weekend when they play away to local rivals Bath City tomorrow before hosting a difficult tie against Newport County two days later.
