VC hosts scholars’ tea partyOn Thursday 8 March all philanthropically-funded first year scholarship students were invited to meet over tea and biscuits for the annual Scholars’ Tea, hosted by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dame Glynis Breakwell and joined by members of University staff.
Three academics promoted to Professor
Three academics at the University have been promoted to personal chairs: Avi Shankar (School of Management), Dmitry Skryabin (Physics) and Stephen Gough (Education).

New Widening Participation Office – increasing access from under-represented groups
We are making a number of changes to ensure that the University meets new targets for increasing its intake of students from under-represented groups.
Research in the World lecture report – poverty & politics
Staff and students heard Baroness Professor Ruth Lister reflect on how our understanding of poverty has changed over the past 50 years, since the ‘rediscovery of poverty’ in the 1960s, and what this has meant for policy.
Following the success of last year’s competition, we are very pleased to welcome a new Dragon into the Den for 2012. Mr Hubert Velge (MSc Business Administration 1984) will not only bring an additional £12,500 worth of start-up funds to the competition, but will offer his support and advice, invaluable to our student entrepreneurs.
Video: Children with autism participate in design of tutorial tool
Academics from the University of Bath’s Departments of Psychology and Computer Science are working together with children with Autism to develop a computer-based maths tutorial system.
Students from Bath swept the board at a recent student entrepreneur pitching event run with one of the UK’s biggest employers.

Department of Computer Science shows research at international digital entertainment conference
Chuan Li, Garry Ren and Jake Hobbs from the Department of Computer Science and the Centre for Digital Entertainment have showcased and demonstrated their current work at XML 2012 last Friday (16 March).
Dr Roy Maconachie has made a video examining the affects of the rapidly changing global economy on sustainable resource management practices in Nigeria.

The ‘Simultaneous and Consecutive Interpretation’ CPD course uses state-of-the-art interpretation laboratories to boost participants’ interpretation skills, preparing them for the competitive United Nations’ freelance interpretation exams.
Immigration and UKBA compliance update Wednesday 28 March

This comprehensive programme of lunchtime workshops looks at aspects of leadership in the context of research or academia in general. Designed as a series of workshops, participants are welcome to attend just one or two sessions or book for the complete series.
This one day event will provide attendees with an opportunity to gain insight into the importance and benefits of patient and public involvement (PPI) as well as practical information to help support the use of PPI within your own research.

Spreading expertise through CPD: Fabrication of photonic crystal fibres
The Centre for Photonics and Photonic Materials (CPPM) at the University, well known across the scientific community for its expertise in photonic crystal fibres, opened its doors to researchers and engineers from around the world for a CPD course focusing on the fabrication and physics of photonic crystal fibres.

We're collecting supermarket vouchers! deadline - Wednesday 11 April
Sainsbury's supermarket has just launched its annual Active Kids voucher campaign, and Westwood Nursery on campus is collecting the vouchers. These can be exchanged for a range of sports and cooking equipment for the children to use at the Nursery.
Chance to enter the Race for Life - Sunday 17 June
Entries for Cancer Research UK's Bath Race for Life have opened. Organisers are issuing a rallying cry to mums, daughters, sisters, grandmothers and friends, encouraging them to sign up as soon as possible for the event which will take place at the University.

The conference presents some of the research that led to the prize and explaines its importance in times of austerity.
Human development in India: towards social inclusion Monday 23 April
This lecture will draw heavily on India's recent Human Development Report, for which Dr Mehrotra was lead author. Dr Mehrottra was one of the original architects of the UN Human Development Reports, and is currently Director of the Indian Institute for Manpower Service.

Varsity comes to Bath
This year’s varsity between the Universities of Bath and Exeter will be the largest student sporting event in the history of the University of Bath.
University-based athletes- Katrina Hart, Ben Rushgrove and Sophie Kamlish have been selected to represent Great Britain at the BT Paralympic World Cup in Manchester in May.
