Professor Kevin Edge to be Deputy Vice-Chancellor
Council appointed Kevin Edge by a unanimous vote at its meeting on 15 May 2008. Kevin will take up his new appointment on 1 August 2008 following the retirement of George Lunt. Expressions of interest are being invited for the post of PVC (Research) – see below.

Research team collaborates with local hospital to develop drugs to stop cancer in its tracks
Dr Mike Threadgill and his team of eight are working with staff at the Royal United Hospital to try and develop a clever type of enzyme called sartuins in a drug treatment. The project started on 1 May and has been given funding of £450,000 over two years.
Local school children help save Dr Who
Last week 140 school children aged 11 to 13 from schools in the west of England attended one of two Salters' Festivals of Chemistry on campus. The festivals, organised by Simon Lewis and Matt Jones (Chemistry), aim to promote the appreciation of chemistry by making it more relevant and fun to students.
Bath's students unite to celebrate the launch of festival
For the first time, the University of Bath and Bath Spa University are working together to present 'University Fusion' - a number of free events as part of the 'Party in the City' celebrations to launch the 60th Bath International Music Festival tonight (Friday 23 May).
Students who play key role in SU & local community honoured
Students who have played a key role in the local community and the Students’ Union over the past year have had their achievements honoured. A reception organised by the Students’ Union gave the city’s business community, local councillors, representatives from the University and other key stakeholders the chance to hear about an extremely successful year.

Three-minute silence for victims of Chinese earthquake and cyclone in Burma
You are invited to participate in a three-minute silence to take place on the Parade near the Library at noon on Tuesday 27 May as a mark of respect for all the victims of the Chinese earthquake and the cyclone in Burma.
A36 update: 264, 265 & 94 buses to resume normal service
We have been advised that the normal timetable for bus services nos 264/265 (Westbury-Trowbridge-Bradford-on-Avon-Bath) and 94 (Wingfield-Westbury-Freshford-Limpley Stoke-Monkton Combe-University-Bath) will resume as of Sunday 25 May 2008.
National liftshare Day
As part of the national Green Transport Week being held in mid-June 2008, the University would like to draw everyone's attention to liftshare day on 9 June 2008. Car sharing is a simple and effective way of increasing individual mobility, helping motorists keep down their travel costs, making more efficient use of space on the UK 's roads and helping the environment by cutting harmful exhaust emissions. The University encourages carsharing between its staff and students and operates its own car share scheme.
Je-S unavailable
The Research Council's Je-S submission system will be unavailable from 23 to 28 May. Research Councils will be reviewing proposal closing dates as a result.

This day trip on 14 June costs

Let us recycle your carrier bags
Message from Christine Allgood, Union Shop Manager: "The Union Shop runs a 'use a recycled plastic bag' rather than opting for a new one when shopping in the Union Shop. It's a hugely popular scheme which sadly I have to keep withdrawing due to lack of second hand bags. Please could I ask more people to bring in your old plastic shopping bags so we can recycle them for you? Thanks."

- Ken Bray (School for Health) was interviewed by Chris Evans on BBC Radio 2 about a possible shootout in the Manchester United/Chelsea game on Wednesday. The following day he appeared on British Forces Radio discussing the aftermath of the match, when a shootout did indeed occur.
- Andrew Bengry Howell (Psychology) appeared on the BBC news and Radio 5 Live commenting on the latest government alcohol initiatives.
- Fawaz Saket, chair of Bath University Islamic Society, was invited to participate in a live religious forum on BBC radio. The discussion focussed on the role of religion and faith in people's lives.

A series of atmospheric photographs taken on a low-resolution mobile phone camera depict the North Sea, where most of the north's un-mined coal still resides. Enlarged beyond clear definition, the images become hazy, impressionistic, glowing with colour.
