Contact lenses that warn diabetics of danger
A £120,000 grant has been awarded to Tony James and Steve Bull (Chemistry) for the research and development of contact lenses that use “Sensor Hologram” technology to help diabetics ensure their blood sugar level is not dangerously high or low.

The future of mobile phone technology to be tested in historic Georgian Bath
A research project based at the University will turn Bath city centre into a ‘pervasive' computing zone where users have access to computer services wherever they are and at all times, without disrupting the famous 18th century Georgian architecture.

The role of big business in peacemaking
Stig Hansen (Economics & International Development) has been awarded a grant from the Research Fund for Peace and Reconciliation Research: Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs for research into a project entitled: 'Allies or Enemies, the Role of Big Business in Peacemaking and Disarmament'.

Are you interested or do you work in environmental technology?
Research & Innovation Services (RIS) is currently trying to determine the level of activity on campus in the area of environmental technology and are collecting information about projects on this topic. For further information or to register your interest, please contact Marcelle McManus ext 4550.

£3,000 scholarships for best international students
The University has launched a new £200,000 scholarship scheme to attract the most able international students to study here at Bath.

IDEALS project in Zambia
Six students from the University of Bath have been selected to visit Zambia this summer as part of the International Development Through Excellence and Leadership in Sport scheme.

Open evening to answer questions on life at university
Local sixth-form students and their families are invited to attend an open evening to get tips and advice on fees, funding and budgeting whilst at university. The open evenings will be held on campus on 1 & 9 March for upper-sixth students, and 28 March for lower-sixth students.

Free lecture: Discovering the ancient city of Petra
Local people will have the opportunity to hear about the discovery of Petra, the legendary lost city of the ancient world, in a free lecture next Wednesday (1 March).

Professor Ron Tottle dies
We regret to announce the death of Professor CR Tottle on 13 February 2006, aged 85. Professor Tottle was employed as Professor of Materials Science in 1967, then from 1975 until his retirement in 1977, he was Professor of Medical Science and the Director of BIME.

Harassment, bullying & discrimination
Staff (and students) are invited you to take part in a review of the experience and management of harassment, bullying and discrimination at the University. The review consists of a survey (See link above) which should be printed out, completed and returned to the Students' Union AWARE Centre or Marlene Bertrand, Equalities & Diversity, HR, before 15 March 2006. Responses are anonymous and will be received in confidence.

Open Forum
There will also be an opportunity to discuss the issues raised by this review at an Open Forum chaired by Mark Ames, Head of Student Services. The Open Forum will take place in the Council Chamber, Level 3, Wessex House on 2 March 2006, 2.30-4.00pm.

Pay Modernisation update - Job matching process
A framework of representative roles has been established; now the remaining roles within the University that have not been individually evaluated need to be matched. The complete spectrum can then be mapped onto a new grading structure.

Strike action by AUT
Strike action has been called by members of the academic union AUT for Tuesday 7 March in a dispute relating to their pay claim.

Panic alarms fitted to disabled toilets
Estates would like to promote a general awareness about these new alarms and advise all staff and students what to do should the alarm be activated.

Learn Spanish in Alicante free of charge
Under the Cooperation Agreement between the Universities of Bath and Alicante, there are opportunities for members of staff to acquire basic language skills, or to improve those that they already have, whilst learning about Spanish culture. The courses and accommodation are free of charge and run in July and August. For information and application forms, email S.Stanford@bath.ac.uk Closing date for applications is 20 March.
