Research paper on cancer drug accorded ‘VIP’ status
A paper on the anti-cancer drug Irosustat, designed by researchers at the University of Bath, has been awarded ‘Very Important Paper’ status by the medicinal chemistry journal ChemMedChem, including a special cover feature designed by the research group.

World-renowned Professor of psychology joins the Department for Health on sabbatical
Richard Ryan, a world-renowned psychologist, has joined the University’s Department for Health for six months on a visiting professorship funded by the Leverhulme Trust.

Bath death expert features in film
John Troyer, an expert in death studies, is featuring in a film about the 1930s and 40s Chicago heiress Frances Glessner Lee, who created macabre dolls’ houses showing murder scenes. It is being premiered in London next month.

Researchers at the university are at the heart of an innovative building project working towards the protection of historic buildings.

Scientists develop new technique for understanding quantum effects in water
Water covers over two thirds of our planet and is essential for life on Earth. Its chemical formula is one of the few most people can name, but there is still much to learn about the structure of H2O. Scientists in Grenoble, including experts from the University, have developed a new technique using oxygen isotopes to study in detail the structure of the world's most valuable resource.

Designated Car Share parking spaces
The Car Share permit scheme is designed for members of staff (and eligible students) who car/lift share with others. One permit may be purchased at the standard rate of £166.22 by a Principal Permit Holder, who will then undertake to collect the shared fee from the others in the group.

Academic staff are invited to process in the 2011 Winter Graduation Ceremonies to be held in the Assembly Rooms in Bath on Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 December.

Funding available for special student projects
Alumni Fund grants can be made available for any project which can be shown to enhance the University of Bath experience across the wider student community. The next deadline is 7th November 2011 - SU applications need approval and endorsement from the SU General Manager, so need to be submitted to him a week before to allow for this.

The Knowledge Transfer Account KT Champion funding is available to all academics, non-academic (e.g. research managers) and research staff to support relationship building with external organisations. The funding has supported travel to attend advisory boards or meet organisations, industrial conferences at Bath, scoping studies for further research funding, website development, mentoring, plus events with policy makers and practitioners in Bath and in London. Bath setting standards for HE on student engagement
The University of Bath’s reputation for engaging effectively with its students has, once again, received national recognition. The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) has invited Gwen van der Velden, Director of Learning & Teaching Enhancement, to join a newly created Advisory Group to develop a new chapter of the UK Quality Code.

A review from the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) has been scheduled. The QAA will be replacing the 'institutional audit' with an institutional review with effect from September 2011. New e-learning module: writing your thesis
Produced by the Researcher Development Unit, the new ‘Writing your Thesis’ course brings together expertise and advice from academics, skills development staff and research students from the Universities of Bath, Bristol and Exeter (Researcher Development Online collaboration). Expert advice has also been provided by the University of Bath’s writing coach, Dr Trevor Day. A full list of courses is available.

Researchers: new online course to help you find careers beyond academia
The Researcher Development Unit has launched a new e-Learning module, giving advice and information to researchers on careers outside academia. On the course, researchers will be encouraged to broaden their horizons in terms of career choices, and will gain practical tips to help secure their ideal job.

Bath City FC and the University create unrivalled football development programme
Bath City Football Club and the University of Bath have joined forces to create a partnership unique in British sport.  The result is the new Bath City Under 21 Development Squad, an event that Bath City manager Adie Britton describes as “the most exciting footballing development that has happened in my seven years at the club.” Both the club and the University will provide players for the new team, which will start matches against development squads from local Football League teams this season.

Hunt equals best world ranking
University of Bath student Louise Hunt goes into her final wheelchair tennis tournament of the season this week in Nottingham on the crest of a wave after winning her fourth title in two weeks on Saturday in Greece.
