Bath is part of £5 million research centre to tackle smoking
The University of Bath’s Tobacco Control Research Group is part of a collaboration that has been successful in securing £5 million funding to establish a UK Centre for Tobacco Control Studies (UKCTCS).
Academic contributes to House of Commons report
Richard Whitman (European Studies & Modern Languages) has made an important contribution to a report published by the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Commons this week. He submitted oral and written evidence to the committee’s investigation into the foreign policy aspects of the Lisbon Treaty in November 2007.
Professor invited to share expertise in China
Helen Haste (Psychology) has been invited to give a series of lectures at East China
Normal University in Shanghai in April. The theme of lectures will be 'Citizenship, morality and culture'.
Sensors & Sensing workshop - an opportunity for new collaborations
Academics and researchers from across the University are invited to participate in a one day off-site workshop on ‘Sensors & Sensing’. The event is being facilitated by the EPSRC Bridging the Gaps project between the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science in cooperation with QinetiQ. The day will take place in April. Please register your interest.

The University will be celebrating diversity during February with many different events planned throughout the month - seminars, a book club, a comedy night, live music.
Launch of new lunchtime programme in Bath
A new programme of lunchtime of lectures in Bath started today. Monthly lectures in February and March will focus on Victorian country houses and mythical places such as Avalon and Eden.
Celtic culture kicks off lunchtime lectures for Swindon
The new lunchtime lecture programme for Swindon begins on Tuesday 29 January with a lecture about Celtic culture.

Local Government Pension Scheme to change
Changes to the Avon Pension Fund are to come into force from 1 April.
Bath festival discount and advance tickets available to all staff
University staff are able to buy tickets for three of the most anticipated events at the Bath International Music Festival in advance of the general availability and at a ten per cent discount. (This offer is available until Monday 28 January).

Nominations
University of Bath teaching awards
Nominations are now open for the 2008 University of Bath teaching awards, which encourage and recognise significant contributions by staff to the academic lives of students. Nominations are welcome from both staff and students. The deadline for nominations is Friday 7 March. There are three awards which focus on different aspects of teaching.
Chancellor's Prize – your chance to nominate a final year student
The nominated student should have demonstrated academic excellence, together with a contribution to the life, academic reputation and general work of the University.
Election of research staff to serve on Equalities & Diversity Committee
Nominations are requested for a research staff representative to serve on the Equalities & Diversity Committee until 31 July 2010.

Netballers bid to stretch winning run

Emma is England’s top-scorer
Natural Sciences student and hockey player Emma Thomas was top-scorer at last weekend’s EuroHockey Indoors Nations Challenge – but her goals weren’t quite enough to propel England to promotion.
Ryan Scott tops indoor sprint rankings
Sports Performance student Ryan Scott is the fastest Brit indoors so far this year.
The 20-year-old sprinter ran a time of 6.70 seconds to win the 60m title at the Midland Indoor Senior Championships in Birmingham last weekend.
Former member of staff Kristan Bromley finished four-hundredths of a second behind USA slider Zach Lund to claim silver in the World Cup and win the European crown.
