One in ten teenage girls have self-harmed
Research by Karen Rodham (Psychology) has shown that ten per cent of teenage girls self-harm each year and the problem is far more widespread than was previously thought.

'Significant increase' in number of research fellowships
The University has been awarded nine new Research Council UK Academic Fellowships, a significant increase on the five awarded in the last round. The prestigious five-year fellowships, which will commence in 2006 and 2007, have been awarded across six departments.

92% of Bath students would recommend a friend or relative study here
More than nine out of ten students at the University of Bath would recommend that a friend or relative should study here, the Student Experience Survey shows.

Head to the pub for a chat about science
As part of an ongoing series of monthly events, the Raven in Queen Street will host some of the country's leading scientists who will talk informally about their research over a pint. The first meeting of Bath Science Cafe will take place on Monday 11 September when The science of ID cards will be discussed.

Business course shows how to improve management
The Division for Lifelong Learning is running a 10-week course entitled Managing Human Resources at the Claverton Down campus on Monday evenings, starting in October.

Works of genius: Brunel's engineering achievements and their legacy
Engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, born 200 years ago, helped transform rural Britain into a leader in industry. On 15 September, the anniversary of his death, an international symposium in Swindon will consider the findings of recent research into the man and his work.

Cost of living increases on existing salary scales
The national increases can now be viewed online. Additional rises will be notified in due course.

Underdeck closure
During the week commencing Monday 4 September, the underdeck will be partially and progressively closed in different areas whilst works are undertaken to install essential safety barriers. Estates apologises for the inconvenience caused.

Heads of Department Meetings
The notes for the meeting which took place on 5 June are now available online.

Staff discounts on lifelong learning courses
There is now a range of discounts for staff attending courses run by the Division for Lifelong Learning. Additionally, language courses will be discounted by the Language Centre and NEBOSH courses will be free.

Director of Estates' update
It has been a busy summer for the Department of Estates with a major programme of works now underway to improve key facilities, reorganise departmental space and continue the significant investment being made in the residential estate.

4 West progress
Over the course of the summer, design work has progressed on 4 West, modifying the earlier proposals to ensure that the new building meets the funding available as well as the technical and operational brief. There remains a further phase of demolition involving removal of floor slabs, foundations and drains which has been delayed pending resolution of the design detail. This enabling work will be carried out during September.

The years from around 1700 to 1840 in Britain are considered by many to be one of the Golden Ages of European art.  During this period, art in Britain was transformed: a country of generally conservative and provincial tastes, served by immigrant artists from the continent, became one that produced its own outstanding painters, whose work was admired and imitated throughout Europe and North America.

A unique photography exhibition specially commissioned by Dance South West & Arts Council England South West is shown as part of the Big Dance 2006, a national celebration of dance across the UK between 15 & 23 July 2006. Leading photographer Kevin Clifford was invited to combine the beauty of the West Country with the imagination and talent of the region's most creative dance artists. ICIA at the University of Bath is the only venue in the south west to exhibit the full series of photographs.

There will be some strange goings–on in Cornwall over the Bank Holiday weekend as TeamBath's national championship winning netball players take part in a wide range of group activity and team–building events in and around Falmouth as they begin their preparations to defend their Superleague title in the 2006/7 season.
