Many will have already noticed that the ‘news & information’ column on our internal homepage has changed, this is to allow us to continue to reflect the diverse nature of our ever evolving campus.
Fees & access working group established
The Vice-Chancellor’s Group has established a Fees & Access Working Group to draft the University’s revised Access Agreement and to make recommendations on an appropriate fee structure.
Research & awards
Gene discovery shows parents divided over brain and brawn
Andrerw Ward (Biology & Biochemistry) working with researchers from Cardiff University, has discovered a gene that defies conventional rules, with the copies inherited from mum and dad doing two very different jobs. The study, published in the journal Nature, has shown that the two copies actually drive very different processes: the maternal copy is involved in foetal growth, metabolism and fat storage, whereas the paternal one regulates social behaviour in adults.
University of Bath student wins national work placement award
Student David Liptrot (Chemistry) has won a prestigious national award for significant research he completed during a placement with leading pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca at Charnwood in Leicestershire. David who is now studying in his final year, received the award at a presentation ceremony in London earlier this week.
Academic plays key role at the Royal Society's International Seminar
Ravi Acharya (Biology & Biochemistry) has recently played a major role in organising the Royal Society's International Seminar the work he presented at the event has also been published by the FEBS journal.

The Research Impact Gateway offers university academics and researchers a single point of access for information about how to maximise the non-academic impact of your research. The Gateway aims to embrace the diverse ways in which knowledge and skills generated by research benefits a range of individuals, organisations and communities.
Staff updates
Learn a foreign language
Take advantage of the reduced rates on offer to staff who wish to learn a new language. Over 35 classes are on offer in 10 different foreign languages, with beginner's courses requiring no previous experience of the language you intend to discover.
World War I remembrance and reflection
Ominibus is offering an opportunity to remember those who fought in the First World War, with a visit to France to see some of the conflict's most significant & poignant battlefields. Highlights of the trip include a chance to see 'Deborah' the World War One tank registered as a national monument and the opportunity to witness the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate Memorial.
Swine Flu
All staff should be aware flu is back in the media headlines and there have been a small number of cases of both flu and swine flu within the University recently (at least one of which has been very serious). Colds and flu affect millions of people in the UK each year and can be a serious condition for many.

Bath half marathon
Become a Holbourne runner
The Holburne art museum is this year's featured race appeal and by completing the Bath half you can help make Holbourne an attraction which residents and visitors to Bath can both enjoy.
The Bristish Red Cross
50 participants are required to raise funds for the British Red cross by running the Bath half in 2011.

Conferences & events
Administrative staff required for continuing professional development project
The Steering Group is inviting administrative staff from Faculties, Professional Services and ‘Operational’ Departments, to take part in a Focus Group regarding an important university-wide project to explore the generic knowledge, skills and behaviours which underpin all administrative staff roles across the university.
Governance, policy and society: highlighting research in social and policy sciences
Emma Carmel (Social & Policy Sciences) has organised two days of events with students from the Postgraduate Governance Research Network (PGRN) investigating governance, policy and society in the UK and internationally.
Thanks to all who participated in the Agresso user survey
Katherine Swainson (Marketing), Monique Welten (Biology & Biochemistry)and Angela Milsom (Bath Ventures), were rewarded for there responses to the Agresso user survey with Amazon vouchers. The results of the survey are now out and it is your comments & feedback which enable areas of need to be identified and future developments to be focused.

- Glynis Breakwell (Vice-chancellor) was featured in a Times Higher Education article about academics who take on leading roles at Universities.
- Whilst the Guardian featured Geoff Wood's (Social & Policy Sciences) plea to Sir Peter Gibson to investigate allegations of torture in Bangladesh.
- Meanwhile Andrew Ward (Chemistry) was interviewed by several local radio station's including BBC Radio Bristol, Total Star and Heart about his discovery of a gene which behaves in an unconventional manner depending on whether it comes from your mother or your father. This story was also picked up by several online publications across the world including Salut i Força in Spain.

Jem Finer - Meet artist-in-residence | ICIA Art Space 1 | Thursday 3 February
Jem Finer is a UK-based artist, musician and composer beginning his Artist’s residency in The Computer Science Department here at University of Bath. He will be giving a short presentation, followed by a Q&A and discussion.

Sport
Hart strikes gold at World Championships
Katrina Hart (Sports Performance) has now won three medals at the IPC World Athletics Championships in New Zealand, including a gold in the T37 100 meter final. She has also won two bronze medals in the T37 100 meters and the T35-38 4×100m relay race.
Rushgrove collects second medal of World Championships
Ben Rushgrove (graduate) took bronze in the T36 200m final at the IPC World Athletics Championships in New Zealand. His time of 25.27 was enough to secure his second medal of the event.
England Saxons train at University of Bath
The elite of English rugby have been put through their paces at the University of Bath this week as part of a three day training camp organised by the England Saxons side.
