Powered mobility toy for nursery age children launched
An electric mobility toy designed specifically by the Bath Institute of Medical Engineering for two- to five-year-olds will give children with disabilities the chance to make their own way around the house and garden.

Julian Vincent elected Chairman of Trustees of Bath Royal Literary & Scientific Institution
Julian Vincent, Professor of Biomimetics at the University of Bath, has been elected Chairman of the Trustees of the Bath Royal Literary & Scientific Institution.

BUCS wins award
BUCS has won an industry award for its large scale network upgrade completed at the end of last year.

University students win national awards for local entrepreneurship...
A team of six students from the University of Bath has won two awards in the national finals of the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) competition for their work on a number of social projects that empower people locally and abroad.

...and bid for local volunteering cash
The Bath Chronicle and GWR FM have teamed up to support the new youth volunteering charity V, which aims to encourage more young people to become volunteers. The SIFE Team (above) are among the six groups in with a chance of winning a share of £50,000. Bath Chronicle readers and GWR FM listeners are being given the chance to cast their vote for the project they feel most deserves funding. To vote for your favourite project, complete the voting form, which will be printed in the Chronicle over the coming week, and return it in time to meet the closing date which is noon on Thursday 3 May.

Student duo facing the drive of their lives
Two aerospace engineering students, James Blackwood and Jon Squire, will take their finals this summer before setting off on the infamous 8,000 mile Mongol Rally in a clapped-out, G-reg Volkswagen Polo that they bought for £25.

Retirement of Peter Ford
Dr Peter Ford is retiring soon. As well as being Chief Technician in the Department of Physics, Peter has had a very close involvement with the Institute of Physics and with the University's “outreach” to schools. He also spent earlier parts of his career researching in superconductivity and as an academic in South Africa. To celebrate Peter's retirement the Department of Physics are holding a “Ford Fest” on the afternoon of Thursday 10 May. The event will be in two parts: the first will include three talks which cover various aspects of Peter's work; the second will be a more usual retirement party. You are invited to attend both or either. For catering purposes, please contact Jacqui Symon, 3W 3.1, ext 6837, pysjbs@bath.ac.uk by Friday 4 May. Jacqui is also holding a card and collection.

Union Shop extends opening hours
The Union Shop is now open on Saturdays from 10am-4pm.

University invests £50 million in improving the campus
At the start of 2007 the University embarked on its most ambitious estates programme for some time. If all goes according to plan, construction projects worth £50 million will be under contract by the spring, all part of a construction programme that will roll forward until early 2009.

Foreign languages - get ready for summer
The Foreign Languages Centre has started enrolling for its summer term language courses on both the community programme and the lunchtime programme. Staff get a reduction of 75 per cent.

Volunteers needed for Relay for Life

Team Bath FC win Somerset Premier Cup
Two extra-time goals ensured TeamBath FC beat Bitton 3-1 last night (Tuesday) to win the Somerset Premier Cup for the first time in the club's short history. 

Brace of badminton semi-finals for Heather
Team Bath badminton players put in some good performances at the Portugal International title, with several players reaching the semi-finals. Heather Olver, a University of Bath Coach Education and Sports Development student, reached the semi-finals of both the women's doubles and mixed doubles.
