The University of Bath was “pleased” to be ranked ninth in the league
table published by the Sunday
Times.
Team Bath nets £12.5k regional award and bids for national prize
Young athletes in the Bath and Bristol area are set to benefit from additional
training opportunities after a Team Bath initiative landed a £12,500 regional
award.
Study shows how the zebrafish gets his stripe
Scientists have discovered how the zebrafish (Danio rerio) develops one
of its four stripes of pigment cells.

Universities and colleges in the United States have become “disturbingly”

Physiotherapists gathered at the Sports Training Village for an induction
day to kick off the brand new Masters programme in sports physiotherapy.
Unique combined engineering course is launched
A new course which aims to produce students with the combined mechanical
and electrical engineering skills that employers badly need is launched.
New staff to attend off-campus event as part of Teaching Development Programme
Forty-two new staff will attend an afternoon off-campus event next Wednesday
(October 3) as part of the Teaching Development Programme to help them
develop their skills and become familiar with the University.
Seminar promises to grow business fast
Local business people can learn how to grow their business ‘in just two hours’,
in a free seminar at the Oakfield campus (1 October at 7pm).
Professor awarded visiting fellowship in paediatric pain
Professor Christopher Eccleston, Director of the Pain Management Unit and
Deputy Head of the School for Health, has been awarded the Pfizer visiting
fellowship in paediatric pain for 2007.
Peter Lambert is elected President of Society for Latin American Studies
Peter Lambert has been elected President of Society for Latin American Studies.
During his two-year tenure, Dr Lambert, Senior Lecturer in the Department
of European Studies & Modern
Languages, aims to strengthen national research and teaching networks in Latin
American studies
and to continue
to
develop
the
international
profile of the Society.
Richard Guy made Academy Fellow
Professor Richard Guy, Head of the Department of Pharmacy & Pharmacology,
has been made a Fellow of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Great Britain.
Annual Arts Afternoon to take place on campus - tomorrow
Building on the success of the first Arts Afternoon which took place last
year and was attended by more than 500 students, ICIA and the Student’s
Union are pleased to announce that they are holding an afternoon of arts
based taster sessions on Saturday 29 September.
Smurf World Record attempt - tomorrow
Students will attempt to beat the world record for
having the most number of people dressed as smurfs in one room on Saturday
29 September from
9pm.

Interdisciplinary Arts Complex Architects’ Competition
The presentations by the
five selected architects for the University's new arts complex took place
on 20 September. The Jury narrowed the field down to two. It was decided
further consultation on these two concepts is required, and there will be
additional meetings with the architects to discuss their proposals in more
detail before a final decision is made.
Staff discounts for part-time evening and day courses
University staff can take advantage of a range of discounted fees for part-time
lifelong learning and leisure courses.
Consultation on academic staff appraisal
The University is beginning a consultation on the appraisal of academic staff following clear signs of dissatisfaction with the current system. A consultation paper plus a draft of a new form has been sent to all the academic departments. This is also available online so that any individual members of academic staff can also make a response. Responses should be sent to Professor Ian Jamieson, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Learning and Teaching, Vice-Chancellor's Office. Deadline: 26 October 2007.
Westwood Nursery collecting Tesco vouchers
The University nursery is taking part in the Tesco Sport for Schools & Clubs
2007 scheme, which will run between September-November 2007. It hopes to
collect as many vouchers as possible to receive free sport
equipment
for the nursery and would like to thank everyone in advance who will be helping
collect vouchers.
Ramadan
Please note that we are currently in the season of Ramadan. This means that
Muslim students (and staff) may be fasting during daylight hours. Please
be aware that this may affect performance and concentration in lectures and
seminars.

Websites take on new corporate look
The Learning and Teaching Enhancement Office website has been updated to bring
it in line with the University template, and to ease navigation for students
and staff. Student Support Services and the
departments
of Mechanical Engineering and European Studies & Modern
Languages have also moved their sites to the new look recently.

Judith Tucker's haunting drawings of the Baltic seaside resort of
Ahlbeck are inspired by photographs her grandmother brought with her
when she fled Nazi Germany to England in 1938. The charcoal drawings are infused with a sense of loss that shimmer with regret and yearning. Through melancholic coastal settings, the exhibition evokes memories of a vanished past.
Margareta Kern - Clothes for Death | ICIA Art Space 2, till 4 January
Interdisciplinary artist presents powerful and intimate photographs as a personal response to a tradition in Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina of women preparing clothes for their own burial.
Canaletto & the
English Pleasure Garden | Holburne Museum, till

Two magnificent paintings by Canaletto form the centre-piece of an exhibition which explores the phenomenon of the Georgian pleasure gardens. The Holburne's building was the gateway to Sydney Gardens where Jane Austen once strolled and this exhibition both celebrates its position and offers an enticing glimpse into eighteenth-century leisure.
