Research could lead to dramatic improvement in scanning for serious diseases
A new £850,000 project initiated by Stephen Bingham (Physics) could lead to a dramatically improved understanding of serious illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, septic shock and cancer.

Professor joins Wellcome Trust Funding Board
In recognition of his research standing in the fields of chemical biology and medicinal chemistry, Barry Potter (Pharmacy & Pharmacology) has been invited to join the Wellcome Trust Molecules Genes and Cells funding board.

Expert in the sociology of knowledge joins Department of Education
Professor Michael Young, an international expert in the sociology of knowledge and education, has joined the Department of Education as a professor on a three-year part-time post.

International links with Keio University, Japan
John Fossey (Chemistry) visited his former research group at Tokyo University where he discussed potential future collaborative work. Whilst in Japan, he also visited the British Council to discuss the program for next year's Chemistry with English Summer School, and established the first ever link between Bath and Keio University - one of the top private universities in the country.

LECTURES

BIME lecture: the growth of an international wheelchair charity from scratch
One of the co-founders of the Bristol-based charity Motivation, which provides people in developing countries with wheelchairs and mobility devices, will describe how he and his team helped build an international charity from scratch at a free public lecture on Friday 6 October, 7.00pm, 8 West 1.1. Tickets are free but need to be reserved from Stephanie Marshall ext 3659.

How Bath's universities underpin the city's regeneration
Local people can hear about the role of Bath's two universities in building a prosperous and sustainable future for the city, in a free public lecture to be held at the University of Bath on Wednesday 4 October, 5.15pm, 8 West 1.1.

Science of stem cells to be explored in a Bath pub
Jonathan Slack (Biology & Biochemistry) will lead a discussion on the subject of stem cells at the next Science Café event in The Raven pub in Queen Street on Monday 9 October, 7.30-10.00pm.

Expert on serial killers to give public lecture in Bath
An American academic who has interviewed many of the world's most notorious killers will talk about his research into serial murder at a free public lecture at the University on Friday 13 October, 4.15-6.00pm, 3WN 3.7.

Lord and Lady Joffe met staff from across the spectrum of projects and activities at Oakfield when they visited the campus on Thursday 28 September.

Innovation Centre puts electronics company on road to global success
Two entrepreneurs at the University of Bath in Swindon have taken their electronics company, Air Semiconductor, from launch to a successful European company in less than a year.

ICIA's co-commission of Walker Dance Park Music's 5 2 10 previews at Royal Opera House, London
ICIA's latest co-commission of a new piece of dance got its London showing when Walker Dance Park Music, an associate company of the Royal Opera House, presented the preview of 5 2 10 at the Linbury Studio Theatre, Royal Opera House, London, on Friday 22 September before going on a national tour.

Bath hosts UK-USA stem cell partnership event
This week the University hosted a workshop, Stem Cells & Bioengineering, which brought together scientists and clinicians from the universities of Bath, Bristol, Southampton and Surrey, and from the University of California San Diego and the University of California Irvine.

Brunel Symposium
Over 80 delegates attended an international conference on new research on Brunel. The symposium, which took place on the anniversary of Brunel's death, was organised by the Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering, English Heritage and Brunel 200 and was held at STEAM Museum of the Great Western Railway in Swindon.

Members of staff can sign up for a free daily 'headlines' alert to keep up-to-date with issues affecting the University. The email contains news items from the national media on higher education, as well as the University's own press cuttings and selected local news from Bath and Swindon.

Book places for half-term Playscheme (4-12 years)
The Playscheme will run from 23-27 October at St Martins Garden Primary School from 8.30am-5.30pm and is now able to take children up to the age of 12. Cost: £8 a day for students; £15 a day for staff. (Parents are welcome to use the Care4 Voucher Scheme)
