Chemistry lecturer wins prize in Analytical Chemistry
Dr Frank Marken, who is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry, has been awarded the prestigious Theophilus Redwood Lectureship of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
PhD student wins Student Scholarship Prize
Lisa Hampson, a PhD student in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, has been awarded the Thomas C. Chalmers Student Scholarship Prize at the 29th Annual Meeting of the Society for Clinical Trials in St Louis, Missouri. Her conference paper on group sequential tests when the primary endpoint is a delayed response won her the prize.
The challenging relationship of the European Union and the United States
A major new text co-authored by a University of Bath academic which exposes the complexities of the relationship between the EU and the US and looks at its impact worldwide, will be discussed at a public question-and-answer session on 3 June at the Claverton campus (3 West 4.7, 5.15-7pm).
School of Management launches third sector procurement course
The School of Management has been selected to launch a unique course exploring issues surrounding procuring and commissioning from the third sector. The four-day course, which has been designed with support of the Improvement and Development Agency for local government, is part of the National Programme for Third Sector commissioning.
School of Health to host workshop for Higher Education Academy Subject Centre
On Friday 6 June the School for Health will host a workshop for MEDEV - the Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine subject centre of the Higher Education Academy. The one-day workshop will be a practical and interactive workshop which will facilitate an exchange of good practice associated with the design of online environments and the support of communities of professional learners.
University secures an innovative funding package for its investment strategy
The University has worked in partnership with Lloyds TSB Corporate Markets to secure a multi-million funding package, which includes an innovative hedging facility – the first of its kind to be used in the Higher Education sector. As part of a total funding package of £104 million, Lloyds TSB is supplying £52 million, half of which is being used for refinancing, and half for academic and student campus development.
IMML student launches website to locate accommodation during placements
Enterprising BSc International Management & Modern Languages (IMML) student Jamie Zorab, has created a new website, www.bathstudentsabroad.co.uk, aimed at helping other French IMML (FIMML) students find a place to live whilst on their placement year in Paris.

Report of University Council meeting
A number of issues were discussed at the meeting of Council on 15 May including the staff survey, the campus masterplan, the HEFCE Capital Programme 2008-2011 and the review of retail outlets on campus.
New home for Syntacta translation services
Syntacta, the University’s professional translation and interpreting service, is moving to new offices in Basepoint Business Centre, Rivermead Drive, Swindon from Monday 2 June 2008. University members of staff should note that Syntacta will no longer be able to receive items of internal mail, nor will internal telephone extensions work. All members of staff are invited to attend the 2008 Supplier Expo on Wednesday 4 June. If you use a computer, a pen or a test tube in your work, then you have a reason to attend! This is your chance to meet over 50 of the University’s contracted suppliers and internal service providers in one go.

National liftshare Day
As part of the national Green Transport Week being held in mid-June 2008, the University would like to draw everyone's attention to liftshare day on Monday 9 June. Car sharing is a simple and effective way of increasing individual mobility, helping motorists keep down their travel costs, making more efficient use of space on the UK 's roads and helping the environment by cutting harmful exhaust emissions. The University encourages car sharing between its staff and students and operates its own car share scheme.

As part of National Carers Week there will be a display on Wednesday 11 June in the Claverton Rooms giving information and advice from the Care Network, the BANES
Family Information Service and Care4.
Many carers are not aware of the services available to them. Carers Week is
about promoting the support that does exist for carers. Open 11.30am - 2.00pm.
Rounders anyone?
Why not get together a team of seven people and sign up for the annual UBSA rounders tournament on Thursday 12 June. Please send your entry form (available from UBSA) and entry fee (£10.50 cheque, payable to UBSA) to Cher Hulin, audio visual help desk or Tamsin Gay, Westwood Nursery, to arrive no later than Thursday 5 June. First come, first served. Maximum number of 18 teams only. Barbecued food will be on sale and there will be a live band performing.

A series of atmospheric photographs taken on a low-resolution mobile phone camera depict the North Sea, where most of the north's un-mined coal still resides. Enlarged beyond clear definition, the images become hazy, impressionistic, glowing with colour.

Race for Life on campus this Sunday
Thousands of women aim to raise a total of almost a third of a million pounds for charity as the Race for Life returns to the University campus on Sunday (1 June).
Team Bath netballers illustrate some top netball techniques on the BBC’s GCSE Bitesize website. The netball element provides tips on a wide range of netball topics, including catching, landing and pivoting, shooting, passing, blocking and evasion tactics. All of the action was filmed at the Sports Training Village.
