Bath Professor recognised by Royal Society research award
Cathryn Mitchell (Electronic & Electrical Engineering) has been awarded a prestigious Royal Society-Wolfson Research Merit Award which is given to individuals of proven outstanding ability to undertake independent, original research.
New footballing role for Ged Roddy MBE
Ged Roddy, Director of Sport for the University, has been appointed as the new Director of Youth for the Football Premier League. He is due to take up his new post in October 2009.
Mo Kiziewicz is retiring today (31 July) after exactly 12 years of service in her role as Learning Support Manager
Angela Harrington elected to serve on Council
Angela Harrington has been elected as a member of non-academic staff to serve on the Council of the University for the term 1 August 2009 to 31 July 2012.
Death of Rachel Heery
UKOLN regrets to announce that Rachel Heery, its former Assistant Director for Research & Development, died on Friday 24 July after a long illness. Her funeral will be held at St Bonaventure’s Church, Egerton Road, Bishopston, BS7 8HP on Tuesday 4 August, at 10am. Donations can be made to St Peter's Hospice.
Changes from 1 August
Student Services Update
There will be a number of changes taking place to Student Services in August to the structure, naming of individual services and locations. Staff are kindly asked to familiarise themselves with the new information so that they will still be able to advise students in need of help.
New Heads of Department for 2009
A list of Heads of Department for the coming academic year is now available online.
Changes to Department of Economics & International Development
From 1 August 2009 the Department of Economics & International Development is being renamed to the Department of Economics, reflecting the decision of the University to move nine International Development (ID) staff into the Department of Social & Policy Sciences (DSPS).

Corporate Plan
Staff are invited to answer four set questions about different proposals relating to the Corporate Plan for 2009/10 to 2013/14. Deadline: 9 Oct.
New Research website
The Web Team have launched a ‘beta test’ version of a new Research website, visible only to the University community, and welcome feedback on it.
Agresso 5.5.3
The upgrade to Agresso 5.5.3 has now been live for nearly two months, and there are a number of areas the team would like give staff feedback on.

Underdeck closure
Due to works on the refurbishment of the 5 West Lecture Theatres and the new Pharmacy Training Centre, the underdeck will be closed from Monday for a week.
Restricted access to Founders Sports Hall & Students' Union
On Monday maintenance and repair works will start on the main boilerhouse chimney mast and the south guy wire. Access to the Founders Sports Hall and Students' Union building will not be possible from the direction of the Estates building (north) and, in reverse, there will be no access to the Department of Estates from Students' Union/Founders Sports Hall. Access to the 25m pool will be available at all the times from the south footpath, and from the Students' Union building and Founders Sports Hall. Estates apologises for any inconvenience.
Monthly learning & teaching paper lunches
These are an opportunity for a group of interested individuals from across the University to come together at lunchtime to discuss a learning and teaching journal paper, and to reflect on the paper in relation to their own practice. Appointment of new Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Teaching)
A Search Committee has been convened to begin the process of appointing a successor for Professor Ian Jamieson, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Teaching), who will be retiring from the University in December 2009.
Claverton Rooms open for packed lunches
The Open University will be using 6 West South for their lunches in July and August and during this period the space will not be available to staff and students from 12 noon till 2.30pm. Therefore, those wishing to use a social space to eat their own lunch will be able to use the Claverton Rooms during the period up to 14 August.

The role of religion in human rights in the future Wednesday 16 September
Staff and students are invited to attend a lecture by the Honourable Mary Robinson, former President of the Republic of Ireland, in Bath Abbey. The lecture, entitled ‘Realising Rights: the role of religion in human rights in the future’, is part of the 1100th anniversary celebrations of the Diocese of Bath & Wells.

Registration is now open for the first CR@B (Cancer Research at Bath) Symposium. It is open to all academic and clinical staff and students with an interest in cancer research.

Swimmer Liz Johnson and tennis player Ashley Hewitt are the first winners of the new TeamBath athlete of the month awards, which are jointly sponsored by Oakley and Vousden Opticians.
Crystal Palace success for two Uni students
Paralympic sprinters Ben Rushgrove and Katrina Hart were both in impressive form at Crystal Palace last weekend.
The pair of Sports Performance students both won their respective 100m sprints at the Aviva London Grand Prix.
University students in action as England thrash the USA
Bath students Natasha Hunt, Nicola Hoole and Davinia Monteiro all played crucial roles in England rugby under-20s’ 110-0 thrashing of their USA counterparts.
