University celebrates Amy’s success

Amy Williams celebrates her Olympic success at the Sports Training Village

Amy Williams made a triumphant return to the University yesterday, Wednesday 3 March, to celebrate her Olympic success at the place she says “feels like home”.

Family, friends, athletes, staff and students from the University cheered her return at a champagne celebration held in the Blues Café at the Sports Training Village (STV).

Children and local people lined the concourse of the STV to help give her a hero’s welcome.

Professor Kevin Edge, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, congratulated Amy on her outstanding achievement and presented her with an engraved glass bowl from the University. James Christmas, Vice-President Sport, gave her a Book of Congratulations signed with messages from hundreds of people across the University.

BBC Points West presented its evening news programme from the party and ITV West, Channel 4, Channel 5, Sky News, Radio Bristol and BBC news online were among reporters that covered the event.

The celebrations were the culmination of a day of glory for Amy which began at Hayesfield school, where she was a pupil. An open top bus ride took her on a victory parade of Bath, with people lining the streets to greet her, before a civic reception in her honour at the Guildhall.
