University in global top 10 for environmental performance
We are tenth in the new Green Metric world university ranking published in December 2011.
This achievement reflects our sustained commitment to best environmental practice. The top ten global ranking demonstrates the impact of efforts by colleagues and students across campus to improve the University's environmental performance, as well as the leadership of our specialists in Estates. In the last 12 months we have committed to new carbon reduction targets, produced a Carbon Management Plan described as exemplar by the Carbon Trust, achieved ISO14001 Environmental Management Standard in A&HS, and recruited a full-time Waste & Recycling Manager. Most recently 40 departmental Green Impact teams have been pivotal in promoting good practice in transport, energy use, procurement and recycling.
Our Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Kevin Edge said: "Although Green Metric is not yet an established ranking, I think we can all be proud of our strong showing in this international benchmarking exercise. The challenges of sustainability for an institution with a STEM-rich portfolio and physical infrastructure with major legacy energy issues are significant. However, as a community we are having a real impact and I would like to thank colleagues and students for their ongoing commitment. I would also like to encourage everyone to think about recycling more in 2012 as this is still one of our weaker performance measures."
Green Metric is promoted by Universitas Indonesia as an opportunity for institutions in both the developed and developing world to compare their efforts towards campus sustainability and environment friendly University management.
