Monday 14th September 2009
The Bath Biomechanics Symposium is a one-day meeting hosted by the
Centre for Orthopaedic Biomechanics
at the
University of Bath

Hip and knee joint replacement surgery is extremely successful and effective in relieving pain and restoring quality of life to patients. We are however in a period of changing patient demographics in what has been termed "The Millennium Patient", characterised by younger patients, who are more physically active, and have a greater expectation of quality of life than patients of a generation ago. Increasingly, older patients are living longer and have similar aspirations to the "Millennium Patient" in that they wish to lead full and active lives. These demands, together with the desire for increased functionality, are presenting new challenges to the required performance of joint replacements.

The theme of the Symposium is to explore future requirements including topics such as; functional assessment of total joint patients to meet their increasingly demanding expectations, probabilistic finite element analysis of the performance of total hip and knee replacement, advances in bearing technologies, bone augmentation and tissue engineered solutions in addition to surgical advances and "smart" medical device technologies.

The program will include an opportunity to view the latest work being undertaken at our diverse research centre.
