CALL FOR PAPERS

The 9th Annual Bath Biomechanics Symposium:
BEYOND COMPLIANCE Post Implant Clinical Release Surveillance

Monday 16th September 2013

In spite of apparently rigorous preclinical assessment, such as validation studies, CE Marking, and FDA approvals, the unforeseen systemic failure of orthopaedic devices can still occur in clinical practice. Many of the preclinical validation test protocols for orthopaedic device approval are little more than “convenient benchmarks” and do not replicate the clinical behaviours. Relatively minor changes in new orthopaedic devices which allow easy routes to clinical release based on “equivalence” can result in products which perform significantly differently in clinical practice. New surgical approaches and instrumentation can also adversely modify the way an implant might perform clinically.

The theme of this symposium “Beyond Compliance” will explore how we can monitor clinical issues and whether we can use these issues to improve reliability, develop more robust preclinical testing methodologies and identify cases for earlier device recalls.

The Bath Biomechanics Symposium is a one-day meeting hosted by The Centre for Orthopaedic Biomechanics at the University of Bath. The program will include an opportunity to view the latest work being undertaken at our diverse research centre.
