Professor Orpwood recently retired as Director of the Bath Institute of Medical Engineering (BIME) after a career in engineering design and research, initially in Industry, and then in academia and the health service. His work at BIME ranged from surgical devices to disability equipment, and in the later years had a strong focus on supporting people with dementia, ranging from simple memory aids to autonomous smart homes.

His original background however was in the neurosciences, and he has always maintained that interest through a modest programme applying engineering modelling tools to the behaviour of neural tissues. Retirement from BIME has allowed more time for this work, and he recently joined the CPR as a visiting professor. Current work uses theoretical neuroscience techniques and EEG investigations to explore neural correlates of pain perception.

Research interests

  • The neural mechanisms behind qualia
  • Neural mechanisms taking place during engineering design
  • Technology to support people with dementia
